Help!!! I think my daughter has a cavity on her back tooth!! I just noticed it this evening when we were brushing her teeth. We brush her teeth twice a day at least, have never let her go to bed with a bottle, nursing, or with milk. She hardly ever drinks juice, but drinks a lot of milk. I read somewhere that starchy foods are worse for their teeth, and I've had mixed responses about flouride toothpastes for toddlers. Any advice would be appreciated!! Or anyone that's had a child with a cavity!!! I have a dental appointment for her this next week, but I'm worried what the next step is going to be.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Turned out not to be a cavity... just a stain! Who knew!!! Anyway, we went to a great pediatric dentist... thanks for all the info.

Hi, I'm a dental hygienist in a family practice and we do have several children come in with cavities. Sometimes they are just unavoidable. If it is a cavity, she will need to have it filled because if it is on her back tooth she will have that tooth until she is about 11 or 12. Hopefully, you are going to a pediatric dentist because if she does need a filling done they are much better equipped to handle a small child than even a family practice. Good luck!

We were very careful with my son's teeth, yet he had two cavities at 2 1/2. Our regular pediatric dentist referred us to Dr. Patel in Richardson. After a series of questions we determined that his cavities were caused by a lack of enamel on his teeth due; a defect due to having anesthetic from having surgery within his first year. Did your Daughter have surgery her first year? My nephew has experienced the same thing and he also had surgery during his first year.

Due to insurance issues we took our son to a surgery center, had him sedated, his cavities filled and his teeth sealed (by the way insurance did not pay for the sealing of baby teeth).

I guess my overall point is, you can do everything right and sometimes cavities happened. Talk to your dentist about the cause of the cavities and what you can do to see that your daughter does not get more.

Good Luck.

I remember that my brother had cavities when he was a toddler. Sadly, most of his teeth were affected. He had trouble with having holes in his teeth when they first came in. However, his permanent teeth are pretty much perfect--no cavities and very straight. So, don't despair. Just because your little one has trouble with her baby teeth doesn't necessarily mean it'll carry over to her permanent teeth.

Yes, I feel your pain!! I noticed my daughter had two black dots on two of her back molars (one on each side)!! I was crushed! Does your child have deep grooves.. Mine does and that's why she got them. Has your child ever been to the dentist? Well they will have to do an x-ray and then a filling if it is a cavity. Don't wait too long or it could end up needing root therapy as well. I brush my child's teeth religiously and she still has cavities so I know she just got her "great" teeth from me... If she can swish water and spit well than they will probably tell you to start the fluoride. I know my child never ever drinks tap water and I think that's a big problem too because they are missing the fluoride that we grew up with..
I wish you the best of luck!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!
