To Go, or Not to Go... - Saint Louis,MO

So the commute home was twenty levels of hell. Kind of felt like it too since it was a 108 out and my AC went out on my car halfway home.

So my choices are go to some auto shop and get some Freon and hope it works tomorrow. Suck it up and go to work tomorrow, or take off work tomorrow and get the car fixed properly.

So what say you?

Oh, it is supposed to be just as hot tomorrow.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay Grandma, where are ya? I posted a question, riveting I might add, just for you.......

Ah, there you are, thank you! Did I mention my husband will be off tomorrow too?

Oh, just so no one comes up with you can take your husband's car and he can get yours fixed. He drives one of those massive cargo vans, no way in hell I would drive that even if his boss wouldn't mind.

Oh but the weather man keeps saying it is dry heat like Arizona. If this is Arizona why the hell does anyone live there?

Of course I have the leave guys, I am a workaholic, apparently until the heat hits. :(

Dad! I don't want to go to work!! Oh, I could drive to KC and steal Christine's car, it doesn't even need gas. :)

Yeah I am waiting till it cools down to figure out if the compressor froze up. Am I the only one who thinks it is funny that when it is hot it freezes up?

Ephie, just yesterday I was looking at the flooding in Florida and how we need rain. I declared I am going to design a tool that evens out weather. I am trying to get a hold of old Star Trek scripts, I am pretty sure they have already invented it. :)

Take the day off and get it fixed properly! It is supposed to be in the upper 90 for the next week in Omaha and seem to be a good ten degrees cooler than you all on most days! I don't mind the heat, but can't imagine if I didn't have A/C in the car! yuck!

Or you could go to Walmart and buy the AC refrigerant and do it tonight. It's super easy - even I can do it! Get the can with the hose and pressure gauge. Small can for a car, large can for a truck. We always do that instead of going to the shop. It's around 10.00.

I vote for taking off and doing it right.... and you and husband make it a short vacation day. Go lay in the yard with the sprinkler on while the car is in the shop.

Get it fixed! We don't have central air in our house so sometimes I go for a drive just for the AC.

Get it fixed properly. Looks like it's gonna be a long, hot summer. I didn't think consumers could go out and buy freeon themselves any longer. Maybe that's just in CA, though.

Stay home & go swimming. See if it's physically possible for the kids to make icecream in a soccer all icecream thing. Drink some icy cold beer. Maybe get car fixed.

And feel sorry for your Seattle pals in Junuary weather (it's not that bad right now, only about 60) who are still in underarmor or coats. Brrrrrr. X_x

& then we have my almost 16yo son & his Scout troop. After school today, they headed out for an 87 mile Bike/Camping Trip on the Katy Trail. I was the only dissenting vote in my family, & I cried when my son left. I mean, I sobbed on his shoulder.....& he promised me he would stop & end his part of the journey if needed. (insert eyeroll here, please.)

The only thing carrying me, at this point, is the knowledge that we are picking him up on Saturday (for the day) for a reunion. He knows that he can call it "quits" & that's a perfect time to do it. Until then, I will be saying a prayer over & over again for...not only his safety....but that of the rest of the troop. (& then we have my Mom who's calling it "child endangerment", & that's what it feels like. :( I have to agree.)

Sooo, between faith in my son/his fellow Scouts/the Scoutmaster & the other parents/& most importantly....God.....I want survival for all through this heat. In your case, J., go at 8pm & get the freon. If it doesn't work, take tomorrow off! Good luck!

Call your mechanic and say you are bringing the car in first thing in the morning and you will need a loaner/rental car for the day.

I say if you have the means to get it fixed properly, can take off work etc then you should do it! Having no air in 108 degree weather... I cant even imagine.

If you have a regular mechanic that you trust will be able to look at it first thing in the morning, then I would go for the "true fixing properly" thing. If not, then call in anyway, have a fun day, and call around to find somebody to look at it on Monday. Then maybe call in on Monday also. Really long weekend, plus you get Wednesday off as well, right? Short week next week. lol

I'd take tomorrow off, fill up the Freon (you'll need it this summer), and then get an early start on your 4th of July weekend(?) Is that what it is called when it falls on a Weds? ;-)

I live near AZ and I don't know!!! Its unreal how hot it is and I don't care that its 'dry heat'. When its above 110 its ridiculous and I think my brains must be fried b/c I choose to live here, lol. My moms a transplant from the midwest and always said you couldn't pay her to move back to the snow, but I would take the snow any day of the week over this!! Oh, and take the day off!

Ah... we just add the freon ourselves! (That is, if the compressor and blower motor are working properly.)

On a side note... my AC doesn't work properly, and it is HOT in Texas, also! The blower motor quit working once it got hot.... whew!

When I am up to highway speed, we get a little of a cool breeze through the vents, since the air coming in is still being chilled from the compressor...... just don't have the bucks to get it fixed right now.... :/

Freon - that's likely the problem anyway.

Mine just blows hot air - has for the last month. Gonna have FIL take a look when he visits tomorrow and tell me if it's freon or a new AC...

Or take husband's car to work tomorrow. :)
Or one of the kids'.

I say....take tomorrow off, sit in the cool house, sip on a mimosa (gin&tonic, pina colada - whatever floats your boat), leisurely weigh your options and deal with it Sat or Mon. You're welcome :)

I've been through the game of filling up the Freon over and over, just to have to fix the entire AC for the car. If you can afford to (time wise), maybe try to have the Freon filled up once (more immediate and cheaper option) and hope that takes care of it. But if it doesn't and it stops working again, you'll know you probably have a leak and need to get it fixed properly.
