Yes, milk doesn't have enough iron. It also lacks the other nutrients that are available in formula.
My daughter is 10 months....almost 11. Is it to early to take her off formula and start her on regular milk?
Yes, milk doesn't have enough iron. It also lacks the other nutrients that are available in formula.
I think every baby is different. Some babies tummies aren't ready at 11 months, some are. You could try it and see if she gets fussy or not. I wouldn't go 100% quite yet, just mix it with the formula and see what happens. For a more gradual switch, try goat milk first (you can find it concentrated in a can in the baking aisle, or in the carton at Kroger's) to mix with formula then slowly switch to whole milk.
Some babies don't do whole milk at 1 year, either, because their systems are STILL too sensitive (3 of mine were this way). Babies need nutrients until they are a year, but if you want to give some of each she will still be getting the nutrients even if she isn't on formula the whole time.
SHHHH..... Do not tell anyone or post it on the internet or anything...(LOL) but babies are not given whole milk until the age of 12 months because the baby's gut can not process the whole milk protien. Now the secret is that all babies are able to process that protien somewhere between 10 1/2 & 11 months. Some premie babies are not until about 11 1/2 months. So we tell people 12 months because that is safe to say because all normal babies can by 12 months. Keeps parents from guessing if their baby is a 10 1/2 or 11 1/2 monther. So the truth is, your baby is on the side of probably being able to process the protien just fine. So the age that it is safe to say is 12 months. So if your baby was and is average to large size, go for it. She is at the age anyway. The only reason the medical world does not say 10-11 months is because it is hard to pin point when the gut developes; will yours be 10 or 11? So to say 12 is just safe. Just go for it and you will know 12 hours after giving it if she is processing it. If she is not, just stop. Also be sure to give her iron rich foods. Formula & breastmilk helps with iron, so be sure she is getting a good source of iron and she should be fine.
I started weaning my older son from breastmilk at 11-11.5 months. I replaced 1 feeding every few days with whole milk. But he didn't like whole milk so he got 2% and extra dairy products. I think unless you have a family history of milk protein intolerance or allergies, it will probably be fine.
It is worth trying. My son is 10 months today and I plan on starting in about a month and a half. I can't wait until we are bottle and formula free.
my dr. told me the same thing michelle m. said. I switched mine at 11 months and she was fine.
What about a month of half & half mixed milk & formula?
I switched my son at 10 mos. He just wouldn't take formula anymore. Go for it if you think she is ready.
No. It is perfectly fine. I started with my older son when he was 10 months old.
We started mixing it for our son around this age and then by 12 months were completely done with breastmilk and formula. It wasn't an option for us to continue past this time with breastmilk and I'm not a huge believer in formula past a certain point. He had no signs of allergies, was already eating dairy based foods, etc. He also eats a lot of food so I didn't feel like he wasn't going to get the iron that the pediatrician said was the only reason he had to hesistate. Make sure they have a balanced diet with lots of iron rich foods and healthy choices (I know you already know this). Good luck with whatever choice you make. It will be the right one for your family.
I would call and ask your doctor. This issue seems to change quite a bit. When my daughter was a baby 15 years ago, I was told to switch to 50% whole milk/50% formula at 8 months. Now, with my boys, I was told to keep them on formula for the first 12 months.
Yes - your child still requires the comprehensive nutritional and caloric intake that formula provides. After 11 months, you can start blending the milk into the formula in progressive amounts so that by 1 year she's good to go with just milk and juice from the sippy cup.
It's too early to replace formula with milk, but it's not necessarily to early to give her milk. But I wouldn't replace the bottles yet, ESPECIALLY if she's not eating a really well balanced number and amount of solid food. Cows milk is designed nutritionally for baby cows, not baby people, and won't give her all the nutrients that she needs. Still, she can start drinking it, but it's not a substitute yet.
I used to mix a scoop of formula to 8 oz of formula. The transition depends on how good of an eater she is. Does she eat enough of a variety of foods to get all of her vitamins and minerals?
Hi Mom of 3----I would not recommend cows milk at all. I work with a Naturopath who has her PhD in Nutrition and her research shows that this highly touted food source is NOT the healthiest food for people. Did you know that we are the only species on the planet of the earth that drinks the milk of another animal?
Please do some research on 'why not milk'. Go to www.strongbones.org, which is within www.pcrm.org for some info. Also, check these sites:

I would be happy to get you the reports from the Naturopath. I have those on word documents and it would be easiest to attach those to regular emails. I am at ____@____.com, so send me your request and I will get those to you as soon as possible.
Good luck. Oh, and for one more source of info, please read The China Study by T Colin Campbell. Easy reading and full of amazing research. In health, D.
Some Dr.'s start at 9 months. My Dr. said to wait until 12 monts b/c of the vitamins and nututrients found in formula. We started at 11 1/2 months to transition to a sippy cup. I'd call your dr. and ask.
Hello,
Just so you know cows milk before a year has been known to cause tiny bleeding spots in the intestines of little ones, so watch for blood in the stools. It can cause real problems, but also may cause none, so just be aware.

I switched my son at just shy of 1 months and he did fine. Trust your gut, moms know best!
The general rule is no to start milk until 1 yo.
Yes, they recommend 1 yr they need more of what formula gives. Soon she will be there wait. Unless she is obese I then would question it but I would talk to the doctor. I have a home day care and have a preemie that is on formula until 15 months and then a review by her doctor at that time to see if she still needs it. She is very tiny. Then whole milk til 2 and 2% after that. G. W
I wouldnt switch all at once, try gradually. Like, give her milk sometimes and formula sometimes, or mix them together if she like it that way. Depending on how she is with table foods, she probably still needs some of the nutrients from the formula.
we started my daughter at two weeks shy of 11 months. She has been on milk only. She is doing well.
