TMI Sorry Really Need Advice

This is really disgusting but I really need advice. My 11 month old was playing on the floor and when I went to check on her she was eating dog poop. I have a dachshund who isn't potty trained and I didn't see the poop until it was too late. I'm not sure if she swallowed it but some was on her lips and she was crying. I brushed her teeth a few times, gave her a lot of water and then a bottle of milk. I've been reading online and it says she can get parasites and it can cause brain damage. Should I take her to the Er? I feel horrible right now. She's acting normal but I don't know what I should do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everybody for your quick answers. I felt like the worst mommy and still do. I'm going to call the doctors in the morning. My dog is 4 and pretty healthy but still it can't be too healthy to eat poo. I can't believe I didn't see her do that before it was too late. Thank you again every body. And I'm really hoping she doesn't get parasites or some bacteria infection in her body. My dog doesn't have parasites but I'm not sure if that's the only way she can't get them.

Thanks Riley. Somewhere on google it said parasites can cause brain damage and she can die so I was freaking out.

If you have a children's hospital where you live, I would call them and see if you need to bring her in. They would be the ones that would know how serious this could be. I hope she is okay!

My DD ate cat poop, the older kids convinced her it was an M&M. She lived. She was old enough to not fall for it, but did, the older ones were more then happy to have their consequence and to this day they still laugh about it....10 years later.

If she just ate the poop then there is no way that a human doctor is going to be able to detect the parasites this soon and there is nothing they are going to want to give that will treat the parasites this quickly. They will be more inclined to do a course of antibiotics than a medication to get rid of the worms. In reality it is faster to have your dog's stool checked at your vet's office then have those tests run on your daughter. It is true that she can potentially get a parasite from your dog - even more so if it is a puppy - but unless the parasites go untreated for a very very long time damage is most likely not going to occur. No need to panic at this time. Call your doctor in the morning and see what their recommendation is for having her checked for parasites. Most will say between 14-30 days. Then I would just watch her. Unless she starts acting sick I wouldn't worry about it. No reason to run off to the ER for this.

Waaaaaah. It doesn't TASTE like chocolate!

Ditto... Take a sample to the vet to check for parasites.

If so... Then she probably had them already (worm eggs are sticky... Over 80 percent of upper class & middle class playgrounds in Seattle tested positive for pin & roundworm eggs on playground equipment... Transferred by kids hands to kids hands).

Its an easy fix.

1 or 2 chewable pills.

Public schools used to "worm" children first week of school, and then again in 6 months, but that ended about 20 years ago.

Its actually one of the facets in childhood obesity studies. A lot of obese children have parasites. Low level infestations that make them constantly hungry.

Its a quirky thing. Kids in poverty are wormed regularly via free clinics... So these days, in this country, poor kids tend to be worm free...while middle income kids & affluent kids are catching worms from their pets and playgrounds. ((Also, now, many grocery stores are testing positive for worm eggs... Purse pooches. Gross.))

Its really no big deal.

A 'zole chewable, and good to go.

You can look at your dogs poop and see if it contains small worms or small whitish eggs. It's unlikely that your dog has parasites if he's kept mostly indoors with time in your yard. If you take him on walks he may, but it's unlikely, pick up a parasite.

I'm a retired police officer and have seen many children who lived in houses with poop always on the floor. None of the ones I took for medical evaluation had parasites.

And for a parasite to do damage to your baby's body you'd have to have left her untreated for months and perhaps years. My brother and I had worms when we were in grade school, 60 years ago, and our parents recognized the worms in our stools. We took a pill with a sandwich 2-3 times a day and the worms were gone never to return.

You do not need to do anything. Definitely do not go to the ER. There is nothing that they can do. She would not be given medicine unless parasites were confirmed and they won't show up for a couple of weeks at best.

Unless your dog has hookworms or giardia, she's not likely to pick up any parasites. You would know if the dog had either of those - hooks cause bloody diarrhea, giardia causes a rancid-smelliing diarrhea. If your dog's poop is solid, hooks or giardia aren't likely.
If you SEE anything moving in the dog's poop, it's tapeworm segments. Dogs don't pass intact hooks, and giardia is a microscopic protozoan. Dog/cat tapeworms are a different species from human tapeworms. No worries there.
Parasites found in poop tend to be intestinal parasites, and they cause GI issues, not brain damage.
Dog poop does contain E. col, just like human poop. That would be the only thing I would worry about making her sick. But thenagaion, you would be amazed at the amount of E.coli the average person ingests daily without ever knowing it. Watch her to see if she starts vomiting or having diarrhea. If so, take her to the doc immediately.

I would just keep an eye on her. She'll probably be fine. Kids are more resilient than we are.
And get that dog potty trained! A dog pooping all over the place should be your #1 priority with a baby on the floor.

Honestly, it sounds like you did just the right thing. If you take your dog to the vet on a regular basis and it is a healthy dog then I wouldn't be too concerned. My nephew ate poodle poop and he was just fine. The ER said to watch him for the next few days and if he acted fine then there wasn't a whole to do. Yes, you can take her to the ER, but chances are it will cost you a ton and they will do very little at this point.

Humans and dogs have co-existed for thousands of years possibly. This can't be the first time something like this has ever happened.

I agree with Riley on this one and would not stress out about it. Just get the poop tested and see what your doc says for the kiddo.

Heck, I have a holistic vet who thinks that certain worms play an important role in the ecosystem of mammals (not saying I totally agree with this).

This could happen to almost anyone with a baby and a pet.

LOL! Poor thing.

I agree completely with Riley. This is not something to get worked up over, or waste your time on an ER visit.

Take a sample to the vet to have it tested. If it comes up positive, make an appointment for your dog to be wormed at the vet, and appointment for your kid to be wormed at the pediatrician. No biggie.

Welcome to mamapedia!!

Okay - the internet can be wonderful and the internet can suck. in this case, it sucks.

Call your pediatrician. DO NOT run to the ER. Just call your pediatrician and tell them what happened. Ask what they want you to do. Which will most likely be nothing....other than get your dog house trained.

I think she is fine. She may have just learned not to put everything in her mouth that she sees! It could be a blessing in disguise!! :)

Don't feel like a bad mama!! Stuff happens!!

Kids eat all sort of bad stuff! She will be fine. Just call the pediatrician to be certain. I'm sure they will tell you to just watch her for stomach issues. She is not the first kid to eat poo and live to tell the tale! Poor kid! And mom!

I would call the advice nurse at my pediatrician's office. I don't think its too bad, but you should check for parasites and stuff. Good luck, and hopefully, everything is ok.

I'm sorry if this sounds insensitive, but I had a good chuckle when I read your post. I probably would be pretty freaked out too if a child in my care ate dog poop.. I think cat poop would be even worse! But, one of my stories from my own childhood is of my mother telling me that when I was about two, I disappeared for a while one day. She frantically searched for me, and finally found me behind the chicken coop... yep! eating the chicken poop!! She called our doctor, who told her..."it won't hurt her. Her body is probably craving something that she's getting out of eating that poop."

She needs to be checked for worms and other parasites by your doctor and you should do it soon but not sure how long it takes for things to show up.
http://www.cdc.gov/parasites/children.html
The above link tells some about symptoms, etc. Don't panic but be sure to get her checked SOON and also get the dog checked for parasites/worms, etc.
