Tips on Making My Own Baby Food

Hi, I would like to make my own baby food for my 5 month old son. Any tips? I hate cooking, so I think I'll want to make a bunch at once and then freeze it ... do any of you have tips on what foods are good to start with, what brands/types to buy, etc? I skimmed "Super Baby Food" but just wanted to get some quick tips from those who have been doing it.

Do you basically just cook the food and then puree it? Concerning buying frozen peas to use, I couldn't find anything that was just peas - all the frozen peas have salt listed in the ingredients. Do you know if that's okay? Also, do you know if canned peas and canned green beans are okay? I also looked at frozen peaches and if I remember correctly, it listed sugar in the ingredients, again, I'm assuming that's not okay. What products have you bought? Any tips?!

What can I do next?

I've noticed the same thing with frozen peas. I've bought frozen green beans and corn from Costco and they don't have any additives, and I think they have frozen peas too, I haven't checked yet. I bought some canned peaches and pears that have no added sugar, it's just plain fruit and fruit juice, same as you get from commercially jarred baby food. I don't have a food processor, so I use my blender. I was a little discouraged at first, but after I played with the speeds, I found it wasn't too hard to puree. Also, the key is to add plenty of water/liquid! Some food you don't need to cook and puree, like bananas and also avocados, so easy, just mash and serve. I also buy big jars of regular applesauce (no added sugar) and my boy loves it!

Hey B., good luck making your own baby food. It really is better and a lot cheaper. I got a recipe book from williams sonoma. Here's the link for it.

I really liked that one because it gave more unique ideas as my son got older and it also tells you the different things that are age appropriate as well as things that will give them gas, etc.
We used primarily fresh or frozen veggies and really liked the O Organics brand because it’s organic and usually cheaper (they are always on sale at Safeway).
I hated cooking them too so would do quite a bit at a time. I always steamed the veggies to keep the most nutrients and then pureed them in a food processer (no need to buy a special baby food mill if you already have a food processer). Then buy a few ice cube trays and freeze the extra in them. It’s pretty much a perfect serving size when they're little. After they freeze just store in a Ziploc baggie and make sure to date and label it. Oh and when you puree it keep a little of the water from steaming it or use formula/breastmilk to get it to the right consistency. Good luck... I hope that I answered some of your questions. Let me know if you have any others.

I see that someone already mentioned the wholesome baby food website...I LOVE that website. I go there all the time for helpful recipe and food combinations and suggestions. It is a great resource that I recommend to all moms. Making your own baby food can be really fun - I totally enjoyed it. I made a bunch of food and had bags of baby food overflowing from my freezer. And yes, I just cooked the food and then pureed it in my blender. The website does recommend using fresh fruit and veggies, and second best is frozen and last resort is canned. Canned foods have lots of salt and don't freeze well. It's not that hard to use fresh fruits and veggies. I did buy peaches in those little plastic containers in the produce section. I got the ones that said "no sugar added". Fruits have natural sugars, but I wanted to make sure that no extra sugar was added. Pears were easy to cook and puree, although I never made my own applesauce because it's way to easy to buy in bulk with no sugar added. I suggest adding water slowly to the blender when making the food so that you can get the right consistency. It's better to have it too thick and then add some water when serving the food. Hope some of this helps. Good for you for making your own food. Don't forget to check out the website.
