hi,

i am a mom to a beautiful little girl who will be 2 in april. we are still breastfeeding, and i want to wean her very gradually over a period of time as to avoid too much drama or stress (if possible). i've noticed that my left breast, which produces more milk than the right, is hanging slightly lower than the right one. they are both also are starting to sag a little. is this just the inevitable result of breastfeeding or is it possible that will they balance out after i stop? is weaning now the only way to salvage them? does anyone have any tips on saving your breasts?

What can I do next?

congrats on breastfeeding this long! we're still going and he's two. i have the same problem, but i just found a great non-breastfeeding bra by wacoal, at nordstroms...it has two inserts (one in each cup) for "lift". I took the insert out of the bra cup for the boob that is bigger, and left it in the cup for the smaller one, which makes them look the same size when I wear the bra. it doesn't fix my breasts, but at least if I need the ego boost, I have the boob boost!
good luck!

I'm sorry to disagree with a lot of the response about your breasts bouncing back after breasfeeding. I have had four beautiful children which I have breastfeed all of them. And after 4 I mine as well not even have breasts anymore. Before I had kids I was a good size, a B-C which was just right for me. I just got resized and now I'm an A. It was actually very depressing. So bottom line is get a good bra. It is worth it to go to someone like Victoria Secret or like someone said Nordstroms and get a good bra.

You've breatstfeed for a long time. I only breastfeed my children about a year and a couple of month and mine still became very droopy, so stopping right now to "save" them isn't really going to matter. In fact they may get a little more saggy after you stop, at least mine did.

Sorry it's not very encouraging, I think this is one of the sacrafices we have to make for our children. If you are ok with surgery than I would do that, but make sure you are done with kids first. Good luck.

Hey, well done on breast feeding this long...I have five kids and have fed all of them until almost 3. I am currently feeding a nine month old.

Dont have much advise on the sagging...other than Who gives a S...!

How ever trying to wean gradually is impossible :) The child just does not understand why sometimes it is okay to have her boob, and other times not.

My trick is to talk to my child about how it is over and why, and explain that it really hurst now ( which it does if you were to be pregnant) and each time she tries to latch on Yell out a loud OUTCH...and plead with her to stop in a wimpy voice. I always let my child hold the breast insread, until they fell asleep, and that seemed to handle the need to be close and did not cut off the access to their boob.

It takes about a week to get them to stop being upset about it and after a few months of " boob holding" you will have your body to yourself again

By the way sagging and uneven boobs are a sign of maturity :)

Hi R.;

I think weaning your daughter now with your breast feeding is time to stop. I only breast feeding my 4 children for 1 1/2 yrs old then I cook a home meal food to feed them. They will be fine and healthy. Also your sagging uneven breasts will is part of nature that will change the shape because we got pregnant. Also breast feeding will reshape our breasts unevenly. Don't worry about it, it will comes back to a natural and beautiful shape of your breasts. God gave us the body to have a child and we have to feed those precious child into our breasts. Good luck and enjoy your daughter. She will be a good daughter and closer to you since you breastfeeding her for 2 yrs.

The saying that breastfeeding helps the baby but not the breast is actually not true ....well, maybe it doesn't help them look any better ;) but it's been proven that nursing actually helps fight against breast cancer. As the daughter of a breast cancer survivor, I'm just thankful that I get to keep both of mine right now, imperfect as they may be! I agree, love yourself and your breasts and if you need a good ego (and boob) boost buy a good bra!

I too breastfed for many years. My daughter was 2 and a half when we weaned. My son was 10 months. After over 3 years of breastfeeding my breasts were also droopy and one was larger and droopier than the other. That was 4 years ago, and now I have to say that my breasts are back to normal. They are a little droopier than they were when I was in my 20's, but they are the same size and shape again. I wouldn't worry too much. They'll pop back eventually!

When you are no longer lactating, they will go back to a more even size, and they will most likely match in how much they sag. Sorry. At least for me, they seem to sag less now than they did when I was breastfeeding, but more than b.c. (before child). Scientists are saying now that it's pregnancy itself that causes the loss of elasticity in the skin. All you can do is get a good bra.

I breastfed my daughter until she was two, and it worked for us to cut down bit by bit. Giving up daytime feedings are the easiest- distractions, or food or drink can divert attention from breastfeeding. The bedtime and morning feedings are more difficult, but books and toys, and the gentle encouragement that she was old enough to quit, got her to stop without complaint the same week she turned two.

my best friend breastfed her son for a little over a year. She was well endowed (for lack of a better term) before she got pregnant, but after breastfeeding, her breasts literally looked like rocks in a sock. She opted for breast augmentation surgery, to pull them back up to where they used to be, as well as to give them they fullness they were seriously lacking. I breastfed my son, but not long enough to have any long term effect on either of my breasts. I stopped after a harrowing case of mastitis. The say breastfeeding is good for the baby, not the boob. (old family saying lol)
