Tips on Getting Pregnant for the First Time

Hi Moms!
My husband and I are trying to get pregant for the first time and was wondering if you had any tips.

I'm 29 and was on birth control for 12 years. I recently got off the pill 2 months ago. My periods are very irregular. My husband and I have been 'trying' every 48 hours for the three-week time frame I think I may be ovulating. I am also trying to notice the mucus-y discharge during ovulation, is there anything else I should be noticing? Are there certain things I should be doing/not doing? I heard to avoid soy sauce and other salty foods.
Do you have any advice?

What can I do next?

If things don't happen right away, just relax and don't think about it. When we trying to get pregnant we used ovulation kits, old wives tales, and lots of info from the internet. We finally got upset with everyone asking when we were going to have a baby so we said when it happens, it happens. The next month I found out I was pregnant. Good Luck!!!!

Here's my advice. Go out, have a bunch of cocktails, and see where the night takes you! Worked for me (twice). ;-)

Okay, with all humor intended. Get drunk and pretend you're not married.

I'm really kidding, but I know so many unmarried girls who accidenlty got pregnant becuase they were drunk and stupid. My friend has been trying for 4 years and she said it's only drunk single girls who get pregnant. (I hope I didn't offend you)

You have to relax. My best friend and her husband tried and tried for 3 years. Finally they gave up and decided they wouldn't have children. All of a sudden she was pregnant. Stress doesn't help matters at all.

I've never had a problem getting pregnant and when I do, I get super pregnant (twins twice). When I got pregnant we weren't trying, but we weren't preventing either. We were having A LOT of sex though, probably close to everyday.

Sometimes it takes time for your body to regulate after getting off the pill.

EDITED TO ADD: Also, there are some things you can do to make sure hubbys swimmers are great. Have him wear boxers if he doesn't already. His diet is important too. Alcohol and any kind of smoking should be avoided. No laptops on his lap.

Some people seem to think that stress causes infertility. Well, if that were true nobody would have more than one kid:) Seriously, It can take several months for your cycles to regulate after using the pill for that long. Were they regular before using the pill? I recommend the Clear Blue Easy ovulation predictor strips that show a happy face instead of 2 lines. They're more expensive, but idiot proof. Good luck!

Speaking from personal experience, my advice to anyone trying to get pregnant is to stop trying so hard. Every 48 hours? That's just too much pressure and too many occasions for dissappointment (unless you and your husband are sex machines - then by all means, carry on). Educate yourself when, during your cycle, ovulation probably occurs. That's the best time to get it on. If after a year of trying naturally without success, then you can get start the baby steps of getting assistance with an ovulation kit. For now, just have fun.

You should never 'try' to get pregnant. My husband and I got married last Feb. and we wanted kids right away despite him deploying to Afghanistan in May. We started 'Trying' in March and had sex everyday multiple times a day, I would even come home on my lunch breaks from work just to try. We did this from March until the day he left for Afghanistan in May of last year and nothing. So we decided to stop trying and stop thinking about it, he came home for 2 weeks in July and of course we weren't thinking about that we were just happy to see each other. He left for Afghanistan again on August 1st, on August 4th I found I out we were pregnant with our first child. I am now 37 weeks pregnant. Best advice is don't try, don't listen to all those plans on what not to eat to increase your chances, your body will get pregnant when it is ready. (FYI I was on birth Control for 6 years and on the shot for 2 years. Sometimes it takes longer for your birth control to get out of your system the longer you take it.) Good luck and I hope you get pregnant soon. :)

You haven't been trying long, so I wouldn't be worried, particularly since you just went off the pill after a long time. I would recommend going on ebay or one of the pregnancy sites that sells ovulation tests and buy some there cheap...they are VERY cheap and reliable. I bought I think 25 test strips w/some pregnancy tests for around the cost of 1 commercial one you buy in the grocery store. Something like this set, for $8.99 shipped:

http://cgi.ebay.com/30-Ovulation-Test-kit-10-Pregnany-Tes...

These are the strips only, like the Dr's office uses, they come sealed in a pkg with expiration dates printed on them. You'll need to pee in a cup w/these but you'll save yourself a bundle and you're gonna need to get used to peeing in a cup anyway. ;) Being PG you'll learn to pee in just about anything the Dr hands you. LOL! I used an old measuring cup - works great!

Figure out exactly when you're ovulating so you know when to start having sex each month. My husband and I wasted a year trying to get PG only to find out that I ovulate much later than we thought so we were missing it. I had to test morning and night to catch myself ovulating (not the norm). We have 2 kids now but it took these tests to get us there. :) If your periods are irregular like mine, this should help you alot. You'll probably have to open that "sex window" up a bit more than most people (like we did) in order to compensate for your irregular periods, and the tests should help. Keep having sex after the ovulation test comes back positive (despite what others have said here), we did this and we did get PG.

Last, relax. Try not to get wrapped up in all the do's and don'ts, it just adds stress and it's so early, you don't need to be thinking about all that yet. Get the tests, have some fun. If, in 3-4 months (after ovulation testing), you're still not PG, then talk to your Dr and start reading up on the extra do's and don'ts.

Good luck! Sending good PG vibes your way! :)

If you are truly worried about the irregular periods talk to your OB/GYN. I was really irregular and after 6 months of trying, went to the doctor. I had to be transferred again before I found out that I wasn't ovulating. Two months isn't long to be trying though, I agree with the cocktails and relaxing.

I was told that the pill's hormones take 6 month to a year to get out of system. And with the lenght you were on the pill, may need that if not more.
Call and ask your dr.

Don't "try" to get pregnant, that rarely works. Also, vacation sex is the best! Of course, vacation while your ovulating and relax! Good luck.

You might try purchasing some ovulation sticks since your periods are irregular. We don't always ovulate when we think we do. Also you might want to get on a good multi-vitamin program. I can make some suggestions if you are interested. Breathe and relax would be my other suggestions.

after being on the pill for 12 years you'll probably need more than 2 months to get pregnant, i wouldn't start thinking about it yet. Talk to your dr or even do an internet search about it, but i think 3 months is the shortest time and 6 mos is typical for getting pregnant after taking the pill for any extended period of time.

I agree with most of the posts - RELAX! But, also get your legs and hips up in the air, I put mine up and against the wall for a few minutes - it worked for me! Good luck!

I recommend the book taking charge of your fertility if you haven't already read it, really helps with all the timing issues. You are only ovulating for about 24 hours of every cycle. The pill does not tend to affect later fertility- in fact there is some evidence that you are more fertile after getting off the pill. Good luck!

Pregnancies usually happen when you aren't trying or expecting it. I know...happened to me 3 times! =)

The best advice is to start your prenatal NOW (especially folic acid), eat healthy, and RELAX.

Like another mom said...have fun with this. It's supposed to be an adventure, not a battle.

Happy Baby Making!!! ;)

Be Patient! Your body is trying to get back to normal. 12 years is a long time and your hormones needs some time to get back in the groove. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and don't try so hard. Enjoy your hubby. If after a year then go see a specialist. Dr. Robert Kaufman is great and he is in Ft. Worth.

I didn't read the other responses, but the greatest advice *ever*:

RELAX!!!!

If you're stressed about it, it won't happen. Have fun with it. This is supposed to be an adventure, not a battle :)

Good luck honey!

Our first child was an opps so when we went try for #2 we didn't know what to expect for how long it woud take. We had sex every day and as silly as it sounds I did lay there for a few min afterwards with my legs up in the air. Lol. I did just read somewhere that it can help. Well it worked for us...I found out I was pregnant 3 weeks later :D. Good luck, relax, and have fun trying!
