Tips for Indy Air Show??

We are considering going to the Indy Air Show this weekend (Aug 25-26) with our sons (1 and 2 years old). Any tips, insight, etc?
Is it worth it?
Is there a way for people (especially those with young kids who won't necessarily stay the entire time)to enjoy the show without paying the $17 per person ticket price?
Thanks in advance for your input!

So What Happened?

Thanks for all your advice and input!
We went to the Airshow last weekend and paid to get in . . . We had a GREAT time! We brought a picnic lunch, golf umbrellas for shade, and our "rugged double stroller" that handles grassy areas well. The boys loved it. Thanks again!

The only way you might be able to enjoy some of the show, would be to go to like McDonalds (right at the Mt. Comfort exit), and watch it from their parking lot. I'm not 100% sure if they let you just sit there without buying something, so you might have to buy lunch. It would be worth it though, to save the $17/person at the air show. My brother lives right behind that area, and he can still see the planes from his house.

Bring shade - there is none and it gets hot. We took our kids (ages 2 months and 3 years) 2 years ago and they loved it. Not going this year because now we have a 2 week old. :-) Bring a wagon with a cooler of cold drinks and cool snacks. An umbrella or 2 is great.

When we went, there were lots of things on the ground to look at - including a tent full of Jay Jay the Jet Plane stuff. There were several tables of their toys (there's a whole line of wooden Jay Jay toys with a play table just like Thomas the Train stuff). We couldn't get the 3 year old to leave! There's also tons of planes for kids and adults to climb in and on.

If you want just the airshow stuff, you can park along a road nearby. There were tons of cars just parked that way - lining the roads surrounding the airport. Or, you can go on Friday. On the Friday before the airshow they run through the entire air display for practice and it's only like $5 a person (or at least it was 2 years ago). I'm not sure if they have the ground displays open that day or not, though.

Hi H.. We usually go to the air show, but we find a parking lot to park in and watch from the parking lot. It is a really neat thing to watch, but I will tell you that there is no shade at all and it will be pretty hot. If you dont go to it and pay to get in, then you dont get to see the planes that are on display but you can still see the planes flying from outside of the air show.

H., I volunteer at the air show and have for several years. Those with children as young as yours my love many things they have to offer. However, they may be terrified by the jets especially when they turn on their afterburners. This is what I found out the 1st year for our daughter that is now 2 1/2. Last year she totally loved it all. Aviation is in her blood. Her father is a pilot and she has definitely had the bug since before she was one. Wagons work great and so do strollers. Take a blanket if you have room to sit on to watch the show. Come early to avoid traffic after 10a.m. the traffic can get pretty heavy. There is plenty to see and do before the show.

Here are the ticket prices for the air show. Friday is considered media day and the prices are lower. I pulled this information off the website at www.indyairshow.com

It is extremely loud, would advise ear plugs. If your boys are at all nervous about loud noises I would advise against it at this age. Not sure about ticket prices/discounts.
