R.D.
Yep, totally normal; the small baby scales only go up to 'x' amount of pounds.
They're used to squirmy tots on the big scale, don't worry :)
Today was DD's two-year wellness check. I was floored when the nurse walked her to the big person's scale. As if a two-year-old would have the attention span to wait for calibrations, let alone stand still! I tried explaining this to the nurse which landed me on the scale with DD and the use of the subtraction method. I opted out of knowing my weight for sanity reasons.
Anyway, I was wondering if it's normal procedure to have a toddler step on a big person's scale and if anyone else had to do a parental weigh in!
Maybe I'll market a toddler scale and the platform will be a swing. Now to find the science folks!
@Kym: You read "weigh" too much into my sanity comment. Check out some of the other posts. I realize my daughter's independence and encourage it. The nurse asked me to step on the scale and hold DD. I was otherwise encouraging her to do it alone!!! You know doctor's offices. Gotta move e'm along to keep the insurance companies happy. "Lighten" up! I opted out of knowing my weigiht, not getting on the scale. Read the lines before readintg between them and accusing me of setting my daughter up. Weight and food are neutral in my house for that reason!

Yes, my son's pedi started putting him on the big scale before 2 - for the practical reason that he no longer fit in the baby scale. No, I didn't get on but had to work harder than a circus clown to entertain him - equally embarrassing!
At our office, it depends on the child's attention span. My son was in the infant scale until he was 2.5, my daughter at 18 months already stands on the big scale. It seems strange that they don't have an alternative for the active toddler.
I can't remember back to when my kids had their toddler well checks (hey it's late, lol) but I read your SWH and I think that would be a great idea!
At our ped's office, if the kid can stand, they go on the stand up scale.
Its still pretty small though, I dont know that it is considered an adult scale. I guess you take her to a general practitioner?
Yes if a child can stand they get weighed on a stand up scale as the movement on a baby scale could cause it to tip and read different. Usually nurses are quick and have it close before they get kn the scale and can get it close. It is the start of learning brief patients on the Childs part and a part of the visit that will never hurt well at least physically.
from the time by kids started walking they were on the big scale.
my oldest son was 17 lbs at 2 months old, he was on the regular scale by the time he was a year old. He stood on it just fine.
My son has always stepped on the big person scale. We've never had a problem with him just standing there, but he's pretty easy about things like that. I'm sure they have their fair share of subtraction kiddos!
I actually was kind of relieved when they had my 18 month old step on the big person's scale at his 18 month well-child...He hates being in that baby scale! And yes...I've had to do the parental weight in...not my favorite!
My son stands on a digital adult scale at his dr's office, but at his previous one (moved states) he standed on an adult one that was set to his previous weight before getting on so it's closer.
trying to remember but i think yes because its even harder to get them to lay still on the table top ones for babies. this is one of those times i would offer a bribe, stash a toy in my purse or offer my phone
yeah my daughter was 2 when they started using the bigger scale.
this is embarrassing but to answer ur question ill admit it .. im 23 and if its something like a cold or sore throat i still go to the same doctor i went to in elementary school he treats everyone from babies up until u decide to switch doctors and i can tell u that in all the exam rooms they only have one kind of scale ..wether your 3 or 13 thats the one u use
My doctors office uses a digital scale and yes my 2 year old stands on it ALONE!!! There is no way I would be on with her!!!
Both my sons were on one at around 15 months because the baby scale only went to 30lbs and they were both right at it. The timing was not that different. They had absolutley no problem with it and I think preferred it. I've never stepped on it with them because they stood fine on their own.
Yep by that age both my kids were on the big person's scale.
At that age it is not so unusual.
My kids at least, did stay still while the calibrations were going on.
It only took a couple of seconds.
Ok, i know everyone answered the question exactly, however, im gonna play devils advocate here. First, the infant scale should not be used once the child is standing for safety reasons. Second, your question raised some concerns because i read an unlying tone, that will have an effect on your daughter as she matures and becomes more self aware. I am concerned that your unlying sanity reason for not being on the scale with her and even posting this question, strongly suggests you have an undwrlying weight issue brewing inside that if you do not get your own personal growth issues addressed, corrected or discussed these factors could pose as a serious weight issue in your own daughter. She is two, and the use of the standing scale is the first step in child development of demonstrating personal control of oneself, especially in public settings, which is one of the milestones to her own independence and learning how to perform in school, by following the rules. At two children should be able to stand, sit and control themselves in one spot for two mibutes, which increases one minute per year of age. Every child should be able to build their personal growth, by controlling their bodily functions in movement. And next, in being quiet, as well. Sorry, Mommy, but, your little girl is moving towards independence, and if you want the best results you need to set the standards and example for her future successes, whether in the home, doctor, school or social group, but in order to give our babies, the best sometimes we have clean our own personal closets, in order for their successes to happen... Good luck!
