I have a request. I am trying to get opinions on what I should tip a hairdresser for a color and trim. Does anyone have suggestions? I never realized that you should even tip a hairdresser until recently. Do I do a percentage? Or do I just give a couple of dollars? (which I have done since I found out that I should tip, and my husband thinks that I should be tipping much more) Help???

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I want to thank everyone for their responses! I received great advice from everyone!! I also realized from the responses that I am very lucky that my hairdresser still likes me and allows me come to her for a cut and color for the reason that I have really done her wrong on tips!! I am embarassed about it!! Thanks to everyone again!!!

I think it depends on how well you know your hairdresser. If you have a long established relationship with her then I would say you should tip more...like between 15 and 20%. A lot of the time I will give the girl that does mine an even $20 after a color/highlight and a trim. That is just me. You also need to do what you can afford. Don't think that you have to leave a huge tip if that doesn't happen to fit into your budget. I think tipping goes along with the service and how well it was done and how well you like the person doing it!!! :o)

My rule of thumb in tipping the stylist is as follows: Cut only - $2-3 / Color & cut or Highlight & cut - $5-7 / When I used to get a perm (I had very long and thick hair and it took 5 hours) I would tip $10. I base the amount on how well the stylist interpreted what I wanted and how it turned out, and I also base it upon her attitude. Now that I found a really good stylist who does a great job and knows what to do with my hair, I always give at least the above amounts. Others may give more or less, but this has always seemed pretty fair to me. It has also fallen within my budget. If I'm paying $60 for a highlight and trim, I think adding an extra $7 is pretty fair. Of course, I don't spend $80 on face cream either, so maybe I'm just more frugal than a lot of other women.

I am a 28 year old wife and mother of one daughter, 9 years old. I work full time as an Office Manager and am a Certified EMT.

Hope this helps. - H.

Around 20% is pretty standard, I think. More or less if you get exceptional or very poor service, of course.
