You all tip delivery people but have a hard time giving gifts to teachers- (you say a note will do the trick). Huh?
We bought a new couch and loveseat and it will be delivered in a couple of days. I never know if you're supposed to tip the delivery guys or not. We paid the $99 delivery fee so should we also tip the guys? If so how much?

Son does delivery for Menard's - he contracts w/them and they set it up w/the customer. It is his OWN truck, etc - not a company truck! He does get paid by the job (some require 400 mile one-way trips) from Menard's - but think I've heard of him getting some small tips for putting something somewhere besides the porch/garage!
I usually give $20-$30 but I do not remembering paying that much of a delivery fee. I would call the company you bought the furniture from and ask them if tipping is expected and if so, how much.
No
Oh heck, looking at the answers, do you know what those guys are paid? There is a reason they are always smiling.

Okay my husband knows people who deliver appliances, he is laughing at the answers. Oh and the furniture guys get paid just as well.

Sorry but the pizza guy argument doesn't hold water. A pizza delivery guy gets paid minimum which here is 7.45 an hour, uses his own car, gas, and insurance. A furniture/appliance delivery guy gets paid 30+ an hour, uses a fully insured, fully gased truck that belongs to the company.
Nope. Wouldn't even occur to me to tip the delivery guy.
No, one doesn't tip the delivery guy when you pay for delivery. They are paid an hourly wage and do not rely on tips as waiters do.
If they do a very nice job, above and beyond, and you're feeling generous then you could offer them a tip. They may be required by store policy to refuse it.
The pizza delivery person is a waiter. His wage is based on the expectation that he'll receive tips.
My father delivered and set up appliances. He would've been shocked if anyone had given him a tip. He would've refused it. He was a repairman for Montgomery Wards. His salary was good.
We just had a fridge delivered today by Sears and a different guy came and installed a microwave. I didn't tip either one of them. I never heard of that since they charge "delivery fees" and the guys get paid. I don't know, I'll have to look back at to see if anyone else responds and maybe I 'm supposed to. lol
ETA: Now I feel horrible since everyone is saying to tip! We paid $150 to have the microwave put in! I'm supposed to tip on top of that? Yikes. Well, lesson learned I guess. My husband did give one of the Sears guys $20 because he helped my husband bring in the glass top to our table, which was very nice of him. Now I know for the future I guess. lol
Um..no? I have never paid a delivery tip if I had to pay a delivery fee. But, honestly, I never thought about it! Maybe that makes me a bad customer too?! Lol... Just never heard of it being customary. So, I would say No, $99 bucks is a lot for someone to bring in furniture off a truck- IMO : /
Delivery fee not withstanding anytime I've had someone deliver furniture to my home they are always tipped a minimum of $30, more if the distance traveled is further than 10 miles or furniture delivered is heavy.
One thing that no one mentioned....some stores do not allow tipping if the delivery people are their own employees rather than a 3rd party that they hire. The delivery fee is awfully high, so I would offer drinks and nothing more. But if you are wanting to shell out more $$$, check the store's policy.
Totally depends. If the furniture guys haul stuff upstairs, assemble it and take away the trash (like for bed, nightstands, dressers), we definitely tip. Probably $5-10 per guy, or several single $1 bills if we have them. Mattress guys we tip a few dollars. If they just drop heavy boxes in the foyer and leave, probably nothing. I think most of them truly appreciate a tip, but don't necessarily expect it. Bottom line, if we think the guys are good guys, we tip. If they seem shady, greedy or rude/grumpy, we don't. ;-)
To Rhonda H. - I always, always give gifts to teachers!! :)
I wouldn't even think of that...maybe I'm a bad customer....
I would. I would probably tip them $20. Especially if they have to go up stairs, etc.
It's up to you!!
Keep in mind - the delivery fees covers gas mileage, insurance, liability, etc.
Good luck!!
Nope, I never tip the delivery guys.
I always tip them and tell them to have a drink on me after work. Although it's not required or expected in that line of work, it's a nice gesture.
eta
Furniture delivery guys make $30/hr? Hahahaha! Not around here they don't!
I would !
At least 10.00 each !
I always pack a bag of drinks, too.
I always tip delivery people. I'd probably do about $20 for the team to share.
I would. It's nice cause then they'll put your couch exactly where you want it and haul anything out to the garage just for the tip. We do like K N says and just give one tip for the team to share.
I will tip for helpful attitude and demeanor, and depending on what they do. If they dump it in my house and leave... then no. If they unwrap the plastic and take it back to the truck (and take it with them) and move stuff around (and replace it) to get through.. if they set up the bed/mattress/box springs and wait for my approval, or have a difficult time getting something into a room and situated (had this issue with a sectional sofa in a small room already half filled with bookshelves) and glass doors....
Then I will give them something. If it is a small simple thing, then usually just $5 each. That's enough for a large drink (even if it is a coffee drink, unless it has extra shots, lol). For appliances? Not unless they completely set up everything, and allow me to clean behind first without rushing me, and then remove the old one (without damaging or scraping any door frames or anything).
Now, when we moved, we paid a fee and by the hour for the crew, but I also tipped each one $10. Those guys set up all 4 bedrooms, including mattress/boxsprings and furniture where I wanted it, so that all I had to do was throw the linens on and my kids were walking into a put together bedroom. And they were cheerful about it... no eye rolls when I wanted to try the furniture "over there instead" lol. And yes, I guess they smile because they are paid well, as Turnip pointed out, but it is worth it to me. I also randomly over-tip in restaurants, because I know it will make the server's night. :)
You're OK either way, but I always tip. I figure the store keeps the delivery fee. I'm a tipper though. At times when I've offered to tip and it's not allowed, the people have really appreciated the offer when declining. I'd personally give each guy $10 (since there's fee-but I may still do $20 each if they really bust their backs in hot weather). It's not 20% of your total purchase, but it shows respect and generosity for a hard job. They have families to support.....again-I'm a tipper :)
****Um, to the poster who said $30/hr? That's regional. Here it's $8. My neighbor is a furniture delivery guy for Sleepy's in the "big city" near by. Tree trimmers, furnace maintenance guys....this is a blue collar town and they aren't paid $30/hr. I'd be surprised if anyone around here makes that aside from doctors.
Yes, it is polite to tip the delivery people. That $99 goes to the company, the guy who actually carries it in and sets it up only gets his normal wage for doing so. He is doing you a service, he should get tipped for it. I am surprised at how many people neglect to tip their delivery people. I mean, don't you tip the kid that delivers your pizza? A couch weights way more then a pizza!
No. When we've had furniture delivered it's always been against company policy for their employees to accept tips. It's NOT like pizza delivery people, waitresses, or even hair stylists.
