I don't know the website off hand, but there's a shop called Valley View Farms (kind of like Towson area I think). Every Sunday on channel 11 (WBAL) they do a Sunday Gardener segment & the woman that's on is from Valley View Farms & she seems extremely knowledgeable. You might try them. They sell everything from plants to planters, to ponds & other decorations for outdoors & indoors.

A few years ago I joined the Arbor Day Foundation. Here's the website: http://www.arborday.org/ Of course there's tons of info on planting trees, but you can learn about flowers & shrubs also. When you join they send you a bunch of tiny saplings (at least they did when I joined a few years back) and you get big discounts on anything you order after that. Hope this helps!

Visit www.springhillnursery.com. They have all sorts of garden ideas adn even garden kits that you can buy. However, they come as very tiny plants. If you're military and probably move quite a bit, I'd recommend using their gardens as a reference and buying the fully grown plants locally. It's more expensive but the Spring Hill plants won't look good for 3-5 years. The garden arangements are free in their catalog and online and they tell you your zone for planting and what gardens work best depending on sunlight. Happy planting!

There is a really nice nursery called White Flower Farm http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/ that has terrific info on their website about the where, when and what to plant. I recently moved from VA to MA, so a lot of the plants I was use to relying on don't do as well here as they did there. White Flower Farm's website has helped. The house we purchased in MA had tons of plants I was unsure of on the property, the White Flower Farm catalog helped a lot. A couple things I ordered from them (because I couldn't find the same thing in a local nursery) took a bit of a beating in shipping, but they were real quick to replace items that didn't recover promptly. They also have an e-mail newsletter that provides useful info. I've learned a bit from them.

You must be at the end of your stint as a Navy wife if you are planning a garden and anticipating being around to enjoy the fruits of your labor (I am, too - also mother of 3!)

www.burpee.com
is another great site. You can also request a free catalog and the catalog has a lot of planting information and a huge selsction of plants, bulbs and seed to choose from.. My mother always used to get bulbs and plants and seeds from Burpee's and they were great products. Have fun!

I don't know about a website, but may favorite book is Garden Primer by Barbara Damrosch - my book is pretty old, but it is still very relevant and helpful - I think that I saw they were either re-printing it this year, or that it was being updated - I tell everyone it's the best book ever for flowers and veggies

also the local nurseries that are our favorites are Behnke's in Beltsville (everyone there is soooo knowledgeable) and Homestead Garden's in Davidsonville - there is also Patuxent Nursery in Bowie on Crain Highway

Some good bulbs to plant now are hostas (green big plants -- good in partial shade)and gladiolas (tall colorful flowers in many different colors and varieties -- good in sun). If you plant them now, they will start blooming in June and they should flower through the fall.

Costco is actually selling packages of great spring-planting bulbs. Lots of different kinds.

For things like daffodils, tulips and irises, I think you'll have to wait until the fall to plant.

That will give you a start. Or you can ask for "Nurseries for plants."

Bulb flowers are usually planted in the fall.

How to plant, not to sure....I just go with the flow. As far as when, I was always told to use mother's day as a good rule of thumb. The nights do not get quite as cold then.

I use www.gardenweb.com for everything, from houseplants to landscape design. The forums are wonderful, and you'll find experienced professionals on each one who can direct you on what to do when based on your geographic zone.

Be careful, though! Since visiting GardenWeb for the first time, I've really developed a bug for plants, more than I ever had before, so it's addictive!
