The skin is irritated from the head being in there, but it really isn't as big a deal as some people have made it out to be. Eventually the head will work it's way out on it's own.
I found a large tick on my dog tonight. My husband and I tried to remove it with tweezers but the head is still deep in her. There is also a large circle (nickle sized) that is raised and very red around the bite area. I put neosporin on the bite itself to prevent further infection but I don't know how to go about getting the very tiny head out. I will definately be putting a call into our vet in the morning but in the meantime, does anyone know anything about how I can best handle this situation? TIA.
Thank you ladies for your advice. I put a call into the vet and they said everything should be just fine. They said the head should back out of my dogs skin in time and to keep an eye on it for signs of infection.

Have you ever used Ledum 30c. It keeps tick fever from getting hold. It's homeopathic. Give your dog two tiny pellets 4x a day for five days so she doesn't get sick from the tick.
Next time, before you pull out the tick, take a swab of rubbing alcohol and pass it over the tick. Most times it will make the tick back out.
You can try some peroxide and see if that will flush it out.
