Hi, if anyone has had to deal with this sort of thing, especially with a baby, please let me know any advice or tidbits you might have. My son is 11 months and fell off the couch last night and landed wrong and did a spiral fracture to his tibia or his "Shin Bone". I feel so bad b/c we thought he was okay but when he woke up this morning we could tell something was wrong. So, now he is in a hard cast for 4 weeks going from top to down on his leg.
Thanks to everyone who replied. He is getting used to it - it really hasnt stopped him much like I thought it would! But I'm counting the days down! He's only had it on since Friday morning and its already had to be replaced! Monday morning he woke up and took his diaper off and well I'm sure you know what came next! Ha Ha! So, we had to have them put a new one on - it was so disgusting! But I think he is traumatized now b/c of the saw they used to take it off.
my son broke his also when he was a year old, he is now 20 and jumping out of Airplanes for the US Army..lol
Sounds like they are doing good for him. I felt badly also, but don't worry, it happens mom..

Hi L., first of all don't feel guilty because it wasn't your fault..it happens, every single day so don't feel bad about it. But your son will be fine, he will learn to deal with it alot faster then you will...11 months old are so flexable but you do need to make sure, after a few weeks, that he doesn't just walk on his tip toes! if you watch you will see that he just wants to walk that way but you can work with him and he will be fine as you will be too. good luck
Ouch! That sounds painful!! So sorry to hear about your son's injury. It is amazing how quickly kids adapt.
My son had hip dysplacia at birth. He had to have surgery and was in 3 separate spica (body)casts. It was so hard the first time I picked up my barely 3 month old with that huge contraption all over him. But by the time he was 6 months old, he was almost rolling over in the cast. The day after he got out of his last cast, he did roll over and was walking at 11 months. I have heard of older kids actually walking in those types of casts.
Hopefully your son's time in his cast will not be that long. Did you get a Gortex liner? It helps with water. It is amazing that their skin is not as bad as you would think without daily washing!! It will be over before you know, even if you are like us and mark the days on the calendar.
Be prepared for all the questions and looks you will get when you go places like the grocery store, etc. Some of the looks and comments that I heard after the people thought we were out of ear shot were cruel. So many people thought I had dropped him or something. It was almost better if they went ahead and asked me about it.
As far as comfort we used a lot of pillows and I did whatever to make him at ease. Maybe that is why he is such a stinker these days!! Or maybe it is because he is 2!!

My daughter did this when she was 14 months old; she had just started walking. The specialist did not put her in a cast; he said she would begin putting weight on it when it no longer hurt. He said these fractures are more common than most people realize. She healed fine and has had no problems since.
