HI,

You are looking for an endocrinologist...
I have used Dr. Edward Paloyan in Hinsdale.
He has an excellant reputation and specifically thyroids. I am a nurse and would recommend that you use an endocrinologist.

I was feeling run down & tired, dry itchy skin, changes in my periods, wt.gain, hair dry, clearing my throat like there was somthing stuck. I'm thinking I'm doing alot or maybe very early peri-menopausal... Well it wasn't...it was my thyroid. So anyone experiencing anything like this should get it checked out!

I had gone to my internist for treatment and was put on synthroid(synthetic thyroid) med. but after a year of medication adjustments I did not feel better. I wanted to see an edocrinolgist but was told that he could prescribe thyroid meds and monitor just as well. Well...there is more than 3-5 blood tests and synthroid adjustments. There are other thyroid meds and more specific blood tests to help evaluate your thyroid!

My primary did the basic thyroid work up and did med ajustments based on that. When I went to the endocrinologist he ordered more specific thyroid/parathyroid tests. He wasn't looking just for normal ranges but a balance of the tests in comparison to each other. He also did an ultrasound of the thyroid and found 3 nodules. He changed my meds and doses ...and I started to feel better!

Women have the challenge of hormonal balance...
be proactive for your health..if you don't feel good its not your imagination!

You can also ask your OB/GYN, your kids pediatrician...they should be able to recommend some endocrinologists for you to check out!

Good Luck! MaryEllen

Midwest ENT. They have an office in NAperville, and I think in Winfield. IT is WELL Worth the drive. The Dr. I saw there is no longer in practice, but my 4 yr. old daughter just needed to go in for a procedure, and we got a referral. It was EXCELLENT! I have thyroid surgery done for cysts on my left lobe, along with having hypo and hyper thyroidism, and I have FULL confidence in them. check them out.

Dr. Donzelli was recommended to us and we ended up seeing Dr. Kaszuba who is AWESOME!!!

Hi L. - I don't go to a specialist, but I also was just diagnosed with underactive thyroid. My regular physician is treating me. She just put me on synthroid 1.5 weeks ago and I'm going in for another blood test to check my level in a month. I've done some research online and coincidentally, Oprah has been doing shows about hormones, etc. One of the things I've learned (I'm almost 45) is that as we age, our female hormones - progesterone, estrogen and testosterone - begin to change and that can cause other issues, such as low thyroid. I'm also trying to do what I can to help it along - more exercise, more seafood/seaweed, brazil nuts, cashews, eggs, avoiding certain foods - peanuts, white starches. The doc says it shouldn't take long, though, for the synthroid to take effect. I know a couple people on it and they've had no side effects - nor have I. I wasn't having any low thyroid symptoms. Felt great. But mine was only slightly low.

Hi L., I have the opposite thyroid problem I have gone from underactive to overactive (hyperactive) presently. I am seeing a doctor in the city now Dr. Rebecca Brown at University of Chicago, but I was diagnoised while in the hospital St. Alexius by a very good Endocrinologist Dr. Daniel So in Arlington Heights###-###-#### and an office in Hoffman Estates ###-###-####. I am only seeing a doctor (also very good) in the city now because I have a lung disease and have all of my doctors in one location. Make sure you stay on top of your treatments, Thyroid issues can be very difficult if not treated. I have experienced some very diffcult times.
