Thyroid/period ?

Last year I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It took a long time for my doctor and me to figure out what dosage of L-Thyroxine would work best. I finally feel like I actually have some energy again, though the weight gain this past year has been ridiculous!

Anyway, this year, my period is all screwed up! First I didn't have it at all for over 3 months, and now I've had it for almost 6 solid weeks! It's as heavy as ever, and beyond frustrating.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this?? The really frustrating part is that I'd love to have another baby at some point...though I'm starting to feel like that isn't a possibility anymore. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I have been reading all the books by Dr. Elizabeth Vliet M.D. and they are excellent in dealing with types of hormone issues. she has some good info on thyroid on her radio show on www.BlogTalkRadio.com . I encourage every woman to listen to her shows !! You would be amazed at what a lot of doctors do not know !!

you can even go back and listen to past shows even if they seem off topic to you .. some people call in with questions that may help you

please leave comments for her show so it can stay on and help others as much as it has helped me . I am still trying to catch up on all the past shows and have just started reading screaming to be heard

I started out by reading it's my ovaries stupid and was amazed at how dead on accurate her information is I've also read savvy womens guide to testosterone and savvy womans guide to PCOS both excellent !! and next I want to get women weight and hormones

she also has a website www.herplace.com

please check it out you won't regret it !! my name on blog talk radio is VLIET IS AN ANGEL please send me a message if you sign up and let me know what you think Thanks,J.

Google Dr. John Lee. He has great information about hormones and other issues. My nonprofessional suggestion is get on a natural balancing cream. I suggest Arbonne not only because I sell it but also because I love it. Find a consultant near you or contact me with questions or if you want to try it.

You aren't still gaining weight are you? Hopefully, with the right dose you should balance out and maybe loose weight. If you have been bleeding for that long, you need to talk to your doctor again. You could become anemic. Thyroid issues affect so many systems. I have dealt with them in the past and ended up having mine removed. It is hard to deal with.

I was diagnosed with a hypoactive thyroid 15 years ago when I was a senior in high school and it took a while to get my dosages figured out...and it's changed a few times since then. My doctors have always said that it takes about 2-3 weeks of taking Synthroid daily for it to be active in your system and to be able to check your levels again to see if the dosage is correct. Your periods sound off to me so I'd have your levels tested again once you've been on this dosage for a couple of weeks.

Another thing to keep in mind is that Synthroid (the name brand drug) and the generics have different levels of the drug in them even if the dosage is the same...does that make sense? So don't go generic on a refill if you'd had name-brand Synthroid prior. And I've never used the generic because when I was diagnosed 15 years ago the generics weren't very good...but I've heard they've improved since then. But I just stick with what I know works!

I'm currently expecting our third child and my thyroid levels need to be checked quite often during pregnancy because the hormones really mix things up and my levels change. Anyway, I'm saying you certainly can have another baby in the future...you'll just have to wait until you find the correct dosage and then get blood drawn every month or so to be sure you're still on the correct dosage. I'm currently 22 weeks along and have already changed my dosage 3 times this pregnancy!

I wish you the best and if you have any other questions or if I can be of any other help, please just contact me directly...no trouble! Best of luck!
