Thyroid Levels Checked

I have an appointment this Friday with my family doctor to get my thyroid levels checked.
I'd like to have this done because I hear a lot of other women with similar symptoms I have and when their thyroids were tested, turns out that was their problem.

My symptoms include extreme fatigue, miscarriages, joint pain, and low metabolism that was once very high.
What type of questions should I be asking my doctor about this test and what is required with this test?
If it comes back that my thyroid levels are abnormal, what measures are taken to treat it?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

What can I do next?

It's probably not your thyroid, sounds like you have your hands full. It's hard to be a mom, it drains a person. Anyways, I wouldn't worry about it too much, your doctor can't really determine anything until he has the results. Go to the doctor, tell him your symptoms, he will determine what to check for in your blood in order to determine what's going on, they take your blood, days later you get the results and go from there. They do have medicines for abnormal thyroid levels.

Explain to your doctor what is going on. yes, thyroid is a common problem in women. I have all those symptoms too and with a family history of thyroid problems. I test completely normal. This is extremely frustrating. Are you losing your hair? This is also a symptom. Keep what you lose from one washing. Do you have a sensitivity to temperature. This is also a symptom. What you have described above sounds more like Fybromialgia that thyroid. Your doctor should have no problem running a quick thyroid panel. Make sure they include the antibody test. If all comes back normal and you still feel it is your thyroid, ask for a scan. That will tell you for sure whether or not it is your thyroid.

I also have hypothyroid. I was diagnosed at 25 y/o. It was during a time when I was working way, way too much, so I think the lack of sleep intensified the symptoms. I was nearly as tired as I am now that I'm a mom. :)

Anyway, like the previous response, the test isn't anything to worry about and the pills are also inexpensive - there should be a generic available. I have been taking them for 5 years now and definitely feel better. Also, since they will have you fast for the test, you may as well have your cholesterol, glucose levels, etc. checked. This also pointed me in a few directions to help address my fatigue. I looked into changing my diet. I know myself better than to think that I could go on a super strict diet, so I just eat well when I can, but don't punish myself when I can't. The doctors also told me to get more rest and exercise (I was single at the time, so that seemed doable). However, things like "rest" and even "exercise" are hard for moms, so I think with a little medication and maybe a reevaluation of diet, it will help. Also, it took me about a year to feel close to my old self again, so be patient and don't be discouraged!

Some of your symptoms could be hypothyroid, some could just be EMS (Exhausted Mom Syndrome LOL). I have hypothyroid (have had it for about 20 years), and have taken medication for it (a pill daily). The blood tests are easy - you don't have to fast prior to having them done (unless you want them to check your cholesterol, etc.). I noticed a difference in my energy level, skin, hair, etc., less than a week after starting the medication. You have to take the medication forever, but it's no problem (hasn't been for me, anyway). Take care and feel better!
