Does anyone have any advise on how to get my daughter to stop sucking her thumb? She is 3 1/2 and has these calices on her thumbs from sucking her thumb so much.

What can I do next?

My 4 yo does too. I tried the fingernail stuff, 2 different kinds and she doesn't care that its nasty. I resulted in one of her winter gloves. It worked well until I started slacking off and now shes back at it.
Good luck!

My daughter sucked her thumb so badly that the skin cracked and bled this past winter. We put a band-aid over it for a few nights and she just stopped. We did limit where she could suck it before hand--she was just sucking it at bedtime by that point. She turned 4 in December and stopped sucking it just before that.

Good Luck!

My daughter is 5 and still sucks her thumb when she goes to sleep. We have limited thumb-sucking to sleep time and tell her she'll have to go to bed if she doesn't stop sucking her thumb. That has worked pretty well. We also try to keep her favorite stuffed animal in her bedroom, because if she carries it around she tends to suck her thumb. I also remind her that the dentist said she can't suck her thumb! The dentist suggested taking her thumb out of her mouth after she falls asleep, but it seems like she usually does that anyway.

my stepdaughter is 6 and still sucks her thumb at night but I found a great article that might help you, also at night the dentist told us to put socks on her hands so that she couldn't get her thumb in her mouth and while it is really odd it works wonders, you can also gradually start limiting the places where she is aloud to suck her thumb like only at home and then only in her room or whatever and it will help both of you figure out what triggers her to suck her thumb and help her stop. good luck. and here is that link http://www.drgreene.com/21_856.html

My stepson is two and was sucking his thumb continously. His fingernail was beginning to warp and his teeth were beginning to buck out. My husband and I were extremely concerned. I purchased some Bite Stop at CVS and put it on his thumb nail and part of his skin. Believe it or not, in one or two days he stopped (the stuff tastes nasty but is not toxic and did not damage the skin). We only had to put it on for about three or four days and he has not sucked his thumb since and its been over two weeks since we have used that stuff.

I have 2 friends that had the same problem. You can buy this stuff at Walgreens or Sally's they said and you paint it on their nails like nail polish. It's nasty nasty stuff so the second they start to suck their thumb and taste it they stop! My one friend used to feel guilty because her daughter would cry every time she tasted it, but stuck with it and she stopped sucking her thumb after about 1 week! I know she did go back to sucking again so my friend started over and her daughter hasn't done it again! Good luck!

my four year old does it too. if the only problem is that she has calices, rest assured that if it bothered her that badly, she wouldn't do it. as long as it isn't interfering with her speech development or teeth, i would suggest leaving it alone. i read somewhere that without intervention, 9 out of 10 kids stop by age 5 anyway.
