Thrush Treatment W/ Hardly Any Relief in Site, Help!

Well I’ve been breastfeeding my baby since she was born in October, and in December she decided that she only wants breast and no more bottle. I don’t mind this except recently we’ve come down with a bout of what I think is thrush. We went through it before but it was seemingly easy to get over. But this time by the time I discovered my symptoms we had some issues with our insurance, so I had to wait an extra week with out any meds to treat the thrush. So now we are on a 14 day course of diflucan. On the 8th day I’m feeling almost no relief. So I started treating my daughter with a small amount of a prescription from her pediatrician. (She has no symptoms of thrush, just lucky me.) My daughter doesn’t seem to be affected by any of this, she’s still nursing regularly. I’m at the point where I am washing all her toys and changing my nursing pads every hour and applying yeast cream to my nipples at night. I’m worried that by the time we finish the course I will feel no relief at all. Could this really be thrush? Is there something else that could cause itching and burning? Anything else I can do help the medicine?

What can I do next?

When I had it - they gave me a cream antibiotic to put on FOUR times a day AND an antibiotic for my baby. Maybe put the cream on more?? If it is Thrush - Grapefruit Seed Extract (not Grape Seed Extract) - did wonders. You can get it at Whole Foods, Wild Oats type places. Its completely safe - as my lactation consultant was the one that recommended it to me. My sister uses it for her yeast infections too. 3-5 drops in orange juice. It tastes absolutely terrible - seems that orange juice was the only thing I could drink it with to drown out the taste. But it WORKS!!! Good luck!

I'm surprised your doctor didn't mention this, but I was always told that BOTH you and your baby needed to be treated if either of you shows signs of thrush. There is no other way to get rid of the infection. Baby needs to be treated with Gentian Violet, which can be purchased at any pharmacy without a prescription. The pharmacist could probably tell you how often to use it. I think it was 2-3 times a day. You use a cotton swab to brush it in baby's mouth. Just a warning: It is purple and it stains, and baby's spit will stain too! I just undressed my baby and put an old bib on him to catch any drool for a while.

If it truly is thrush, I would also start acidopholus (sorry, I probably spelled that wrong). It's the stuff that occurs naturally in yogurt, but it also comes in pill/capsule form in the vitamin section at any store. If you like yogurt, you can even start eating lots of that (along with your prescription). I think there's something with vinegar (maybe applying vinegar to your nipples??), but I can't remember...sorry! Good luck!

I use the liquid that rises to the top of a container of plain yogurt (organic is preferable because they put more strains of probiotics in their product) and rub that around the inside of the baby's mouth and on the nipple. It usually clears up the yeast in a day or two. But keep treating for 5 days after all symptoms are gone.

Hello L.,
I am certainly of the alternative mind, thrush in the "altenative world", is often anger of making the wrong decisions,( if that indeed is the diagnosis), otherwise, our children mirror our feelings, so could it be that you are projecting this feeling to her? Please feel free to ask any other questions?

You didn't state your symptoms, which could help us give input, and I'm hoping your Dr. is a good one, but if baby is showing no signs, and the med isn't working, I'd have the Dr. check you for mastitis, which requires an antibiotic. Washing the toys and all that won't do much. Mastitis is a toughie, but easily cured if you catch it early, can get quite serious if you let it go.

As far as insurance, you, of course, are not alone. If something like that happens again, contact your doctor's office and tell them. If you get resistance from them helping you, call another time and ask to speak with only him or his nurse - they'll probably have to call you back. Many doctors will lower or forgo a fee for a temporary problem if you are a good customer. But don't just take no for an answer without checking w/the office manager or doctor. It's the doctor's business. Do know that mastitis is serious enough not to wait on and Urgent Care is an OK route to go. Urgent Cares are also able to help if you are financially challenged, too, if they aren't one of the private, for profit ones (like StatClinix). As far as meds, many doctors will give you samples if they have them or ensure they give you a low cost generic when possible, and then you can use Target's or Walmart's $4 program. Just be frank about your situation. In my experience, doctors would rather have you healthy than have you very, very ill. I've actually seen a couple of doctors charge me just the copay I would have paid under insurance when there's been an insurance issue. It's worth a try..all they could say is no. And if so, I'd look into finding a doctor who cares. Of course, your goal is to make this temporary so they have a good, HEALTHY, paying customer with insurance soon.

Google mastitis (WebMD and Wikipedia) are good starts. Feel free to write back or send me a message if you need more info on mastitis, as I'm a repeat offender in that field (to the point of needing hospitalization - it caused sepsis in my case.

Good luck, and don't let it wait...as you see above, I've learned how serious it can be if not caught. Kiss baby and let us know how it turns out.

L., I went throught the same problem (if you little one does have thrush). We were both being treated because we were passing it back and forth to each other every time I nursed my son. After weeks of meds and NO improvement, I asked my doctor if there was anything natural and she hesitated and finally wrote down Gentian Violet on a note pad. My husband picked some up at I believe walmart for $1.79 a bottle. Be careful it is purple and will stain. I just made sure the baby had a bib and old clothes on each time I gave the drops to him and within days we both saw improvement. I was angry that we didn't try that first...we had to pay expensive copays for the pharmacy filled prescriptions which didn't even work. Please check with your doctor first, I would feel awful if your little one doesn't have thrush or if the drops we used could hurt your little one for some reason. It can't hurt to ask.
Take care,
