Thrush - Cleaning Toys and Tips for Getting My Little Guy to Open His Mouth

My 9 month old was just diagnosed with thrush (probably caused by a recent round of antibiotics).

Two questions:
1) Since I now have to sanitize everything that goes into his mouth, what do you think the best method is to sanitize them(electronic sound toys, plush toys, and plastic)? and
2) I have to wipe the insides of his cheeks with medicine covered gauze 4 times a day, and it is a huge fight to get it done. What do you folks recommend? So you are aware, I do not have anyone who can help me hold his arms when I am trying to apply it

ETA: That is a good point S.H. and I am indeed being treated. Fortunately it was caught early enough in my little guy that I never had any symptoms. I just get to take a pill for ten days.

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Gamma G. the burrito worked! Still was bitten :( but at least I was not getting smacked in the head! I may need to buy ear plugs though!!

Does any have any great suggestions on the sterilizing? I do not ever want to go through this again! Right now I am using alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and Lysol depending on the type of toy and how color fast it is. Does anyone know if these actually kill the infection?

Get the gauze ready and place it within reach of your right hand when you are ready to rub them down.

Take a beach towel or a blanket and roll him up like a burrito.

Lay him on top of a dresser or changing table that is sturdy. He's going to fight so it can't be flimsy.

Then hold his head in the crook of your left arm, use your hand to hold his head still using your arm, left hand, and chest. Use your right hand to pick up the med covered gauze.

You can use your left hand to help your right hand open his mouth. Then you can slip the gauze in and wipe. Make sure it's fixed so that it can't slip off while inside his mouth. You need to be able to pull it out quickly if he gets really really stressed out and starts choking on snot from crying.

I used this method to use the snot sucker on him. I loved getting the goo out. Every time I used the snot sucker I'd pull out tons of green and yellow goo. He would always feel better within a little while.

Also we only used bleach water on all the toys, for electronic stuff we misted it and let it air dry. Wiping stuff dry is so nasty, you have no idea!!!!

Just google bleach water recipe to get the exact ratio. I think it's 2 tablespoons bleach to a quart of water but then it might be a gallon of water. I know the 2 tablespoons per gallon is right ratio for rinsing dishes.

If your baby is breastfeeding, then YOU also have to be treated. ie: your nipples.
Otherwise, the Thrush will go back and forth between you and him and recur.

For anything that didn't have electronics and wasn't plush, I put it through the dishwasher.

All plush toys went into the washer (gentle cycle, hot water, and then into the dryer). If colors ran, so be it.

Things with electronics were the hard ones. Anything with pieces I could take off and put through the dishwasher, I did so (eg, the excersaucer toys). Otherwise, I wiped with cleaner, then with water really well.

And put anything with electronics away until after you are sure the thrush is gone, because (as you probably know) you should wash anything that goes in his mouth every night. So limit what he has access to for now, so everything he gets his hands on right now is dishwasher safe.

Can you put the medicine on a Q tip instead of using gauze? Be so much easier to slip into his little mouth instead of a piece of gauze. Just a thought. :)
