My daughter has had a very light case of Thrush for a month now. I got a prescription from her pediatrician and it helped for the first few days...now she's done with the prescription and it's still not all the way gone. Does anyone know what I can do to speed up that process so she doesn't have it any longer?
Thanks so much to everyone who offered advice. I took Kelsey back to the doctors and he put her on diflucan. I have started using a microwave steamer for her nipples and she has now been thrush free for 2 weeks!! Thanks again!!!
my son had that same problem. we ended up having to do 2 rounds of antibiotics. the second was a little stronger and helped out a lot. the other thing is - have you tried brushing her tongue? it might just be milk residue too and if you brush it, you might find it just goes away. hope that helps
My kid had thrush right around the same age. and if you are breastfeeding that means you are infected with trush also (on your nipples). My doctor had me put that yellowish medication (the one that you rubbed in baby's mouth) on my nipples about 3 times aday. If you are out of the meds you will need to get more. If you didn't treat yourself, she will just get it again, and if left unchecked, it can get really bad and painful...then the baby won't want to eat.

If your baby has thrust from the bottles or from the breastfeeding than you should use a wet wash cloth and wipe your babys gums and tongue. I though my baby had it and that is what my daughter said to do from it keep coming back. Than also also sterlize the bottle severel times or like once a day. Or you can also try different nipples and than also i did was i just washed off my nipple each time before and after i fed her. That is how i got rid of that thrush she had!!!!
My son was particularly suceptible to thrush when he was younger. His doctor told me to give him yogurt. He said it would clear it up as fast as a prescription (as long as it hadn't gotten really bad). Especially yogurt made for kids! Of course, it helps that my son LOVES yogurt!
They say to wipe a babies mouth out everyday with a warm wet wash cloth.
Gentian Violet is what we used you can get it at any drug store! It is purple and you just put a swab in the mouth every other day for a week! If breast feeding you have to put it on you nipples also! Cause it will pass back and forth! But it is very mess just be ready for it to stain anything it touches but it does work feel free to contact me with anymore questions

Hi. Are you nursing? If so, there is a list of things you need to do to truly get rid of thrush. Both you and the baby need to be treated. I am a certified lactation counselor. I won't go through the whole thing here, but if you go to www.kellymom.com and search "thrush" you will come up with something called a care sheet. It will list what needs to be done. This is great site with information that is backed up by evidence based research that you can trust. Once the infection is gone, make sure you BOIL all of the parts to her bottle each time you use them, and her pacifier or anything else that goes in her mouth (or you can use one of those microwave sterilizers). My son had thrush twice at that age until I finally started following my mom's advice of boiling, It's the only way to make sure she won't get it again.

Several years ago I had a litte boy in my day care w/ thrush, and it took forever to get rid of it. I remember the only reason why was because his medicine kept getting the bacteria back in it. We where not using a fresh, new or sterilized dropper. Even if he had to have 2 droppers of the medicine we would give him one (and it would go in his mouth), then stick the same dropper back in the medicine so the bacteria would get in the medicine. Finally his dr. made his mom aware of this and she bought diposable droppers. We used a new dopper every time he got his medicine, even if we had to use 2 at one doseing. We no longer put a dropper that went near his mouth back in the bottle and that time the thursh went away. For some reason I'm thinking the bottle came w/ a dropper attached to the lid (like infant tylenol, or gas drops do) and that's why it never crosed our mind. So we just used our own droppers, the last time we did not use the built in dropper at all.

My daughter (who is now 4 months old) had thrush a few months ago. We took the regular medicine and dropped into her "cheek pockets" and the thrush came back. The Dr then gave us Diflucan. It goes into her mouth (and is supposed to be swallowed, whereas the other stuff is not) and it only takes 2-3 days to work. Noe we wash her bottles in the dishwasher only to get them sterilized. I recommend you ask your Dr about Diflucan. Good luck!
Are you nusing your baby? If you are then you could get the "thrush" (yeast infection) on your nipples and keep re-infecting her when you feed her. You will have to do another round of nystatin oral suspension for the baby and a week to 14 days of treatment with Diflucan for you (your OB should be able to order it for you, or the pediatrician).
Even if you are not nursing you should let the dr know that the thrush is not gone. It must be treated until gone and this can require a couple treatments. Also try to treat her with the Nystatin AFTER meals, not before and cleanse her mouth with a little water (just a rinsing, not a bottleful as babies this age shouldn't have too much plain water as it disrupts their electrolyte balance) prior to the nystatin application. Yeast grows in warm, sugary environments, such as are created in a baby's mouth coated in milk (formula or breastmilk).

I appreciate your willingness to find other options for your little one. One that was recommended to me by my midwife was wiping the baby's tongue with a little apple cider vinegar after feedings. This seems to work well.
Also, you can go to your natural food store and buy infant probiotics. This restores the natural flora in the body and helps it overcome the yeast. That can just be added to any milk bottle or with a little water.

My daughter had thrush a lot when she was younger. We would boil all of your nipples and pacifiers and get prescriptions from the doctor. It would go away and then come back. We did it for a few months and it finally went away for good. Try boiling everything that she puts in her mouth after every use and if you are breastfeeding the doctor can give you a prescription for you to use after each feeding. Eventually the baby will grow out of it so just hang in there.
