Well, as the mom to two diabetic kids, I can tell you that she is NOT carrying thrush and giving it to your kids because of insulin. Your babysitter is not the culprit!

Have your kids been on antibiotics? That is a really common cause of thrush. Ask your doctor to help you find a cure.

Probiotics are a great prevention of yeast infections and thrush.

Usually Thrush is caused by an antibiotic it is yeast in the mouth. It cannot be transfered just because someone is a diabetic. It can be transfered and it can keep coming back by bottles, nursing, pacifiers and basically anything that enters the mouth. The pediatrician can give you a oral cream stuff to put on the sores a few times a day and if you are nursing you should use a cream as well on you since I had a horrible spell where my daughter and I kept passing it back and forth. Insulin does not make a person harvest yeast nor pass it on to anyone else.

I don't think this is true. Thrush is a type of yeast infection I don't think it is passed this way. It is usually caused by sitting moisture. Now if the babysitter is sitting with a bottle in the baby's mouth all day, then indeed the babysitter is the cause of the thrush.

Good luck, I had a rough bout of this with my daughter, it was miserable but short lived.

Thrush is highly contagious. It can be transferred by sharing toys, getting slobbered on by one baby then interacting with another, or having the baby stick its fingers in a caregiver's mouth (or other child's). I wouldn't focus so much on the caregiver, but on the environment in general.
Everyone has a certain amount of yeast. In some, it is overgrown and can turn to thrush. Since many times there are no symptoms, a baby (or child caregiver) might not know they are carrying it and expose others.
Incredible hand washing, before and after diaper changing, before and after feeding, would be best practice.

I have never heard of that and I have many diabetic people in my family who are on insulin.

Thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth caused by bacteria build-up due to dirty bottles or nipples. It can also be transferred during breastfeeding due to bacteria build up on the breast. It can also be caused by the ingesting of amoxicillan (sp?) when taking it to get rid of infections.

Hi Venbanc - I echo your other posts. Your babysitter is not the culprit here. Thrush is an overgrowth of a fungus in the mouth. It's usually associated with antibiotics where normal flora is destroyed and the overgrowth occurs. Talk to your ped. about medications to help control it. I'm wondering, if you are concerned your babysitter is passing it on, is your daughter getting it alot? If so, talk to your doc about that too. There are all kinds of probiotic supplements suitable for kids out there. They will help to repopulate her natural flora and fight the fungus.

Good luck to you!

Thrush is a form of yeast in the mouth. Now unless your babysitter is doing something weird like sticking her fingers in the baby's mouth constantly, or using dirty bottles to feed her, then I can't see where she could be responsible. Thrush will keep coming back if not properly treated and it can be very painful for the baby too.

Diabetes and insulin have nothing to do with the cause of thrush. I would get your child to a doctor as soon as possible to be treated because as I said it can be very hard to get rid of and painful. I would also sterilize all the bottles and pacifiers or sippy cups that the child uses!

Good Luck!!

IF the babysitter has thrush, yes, it can be transferred. Daycare centers have to warn parents if a kid has thrush because if kids put their mouths on the same toy, they can transfer it. Hygiene should be able to eliminate the risk, and of course, don't let her share drinks with the baby.
As far as diabetics having thrush, I have never heard of this before. I would talk to your ped about any possible risks to see if this is even true - I highly doubt it.
