My 8 month old son has Thrush in his mouth. I took him to the doctors about 2 weeks ago and they said if its not affecting his eating then i shouldnt worry about it, and it should go away on its own. But its still there, still not affecting his eating but it just seems like it should be gone by now. My real question is, has anyone heard of a any sort of natural way to treat thrush. I really do not want to give him medicine, it honestly isnt that bad but i just wanted to hear some ideas.

What can I do next?

my daughter had thrush many years ago and I got my answer from my grandma. Gretian violet i am not sure how to spell it it is purple and in a little bottle you can buy over the counter. Just put some on a q-tip and rub it on the tounge. It has no taste and does not sting but be careful it does stain. and also stains the mouth. purple. But it does work. Just ask any pharmacy if they carry it in the store.I know some of the K-marts sell it.

Thrush is a yeast infection in his mouth. You might want to give him some yogart, like the yo baby yogart I think that's what it is called its little and comes in peach, vanilla and bannana, the contanier has a baby on the front. Are you nursing? If you are he may have got it from you. If you are really conserned about it I would call the doctor back and let them know 2 weeks is a long time to have it and it not clearing up or getting better. Take him back to the doctor. Good look C.

Hi H.,
Here is a suggestion that has proven itself for me through four babies. It is a product called gentian violet. My pediatritian recommended it years ago. It is a natual anti-fungal that works for yeast also, made of plant extracts and it is relatively inexpensive and can be purchased OTC. Call your pharmacy to make sure they carry it.

It will stain your babies mouth temporarily purple,(for about 1 day) and if you nurse, it will stain your nipple area as well. If the rash is on your babies diaper area, you can treat that area as well. The irritation will dissapear usually by day 2 and within 3-4 days the rash will be gone.

Directions:
Day 1- saturate the end of a q-tip in the liquid. Rub around inside babies mouth making sure to coat entire inside of mouth, i.e. all gum tissue and under tongue. If nipples are affected, use new q-tip, saturate in liquid and rub over affected area.
For diaper area-saturate q-tip and rub over entire affected area.
Day 2- Repeat as done on day 1.

That's it. If you have any questions, feel free to send me a message and we can go from there. I am happy to help, if I can be of any. Hopefully one of these wonderful suggestions will work and you will have a happy baby soon.

Hi there,
While, I had not ever heard of this condition, when I looked it up, the first thing that came to mind was tea tree oil. Tea tree oil (aka Melaleuca oil) has anti-fungal properties (which is basically what thrush is). I would recommend brushing teeth/gums with a baby toothpaste that has Melaleuca oil. Since you're son is 8mo old, it's going to be difficult for him to swish mouthwash, but I would make sure he drinks plenty of water, especially after drinking his milk or eating solids (if he's already eating). The other thing to consider is adding liquid probiotics to his liquids. (Thrush is also mentioned in people with compromised immune systems or malnutrition). If he recently got his shots- his immune system could have been compromised. Just some things to think about. You should also avoid all sugars even the ones in fruits/fruit juices too for a while. Avoid grains, wheat, white rice, cows milk, cookies, any and all junk food, and honey (of course).

Blessings,
C.~

Hey H.,
My name Ahsley. My son is 3 yrs. old. He is a funny and energetic boy, but he also has medical issues without getting into too much details. ITs too long. Any ways he got thrush a lot when he was younger from certain meds or something. Anyways if you'r kid loves yogurt than have him eat a lot of it. It keeps from coming and makes go away. If it has do with medical issues or sickness I feel like I'm almost an expert on a lot of things. Good luck with that and let your Docor about that idea. Also check with your Doctor. Ash.

the best natural product for thrush or anything yeast or fungus related problem is a product called Threelac. You can call the company at 800-305-5710 to order. It is a great tasting lemon powder that you can hide in applesauce or yogurt. It is rather expensive but the company is great and offers a money back guarantee for 30 days. This product really works and is all natural, you are right, do not get him started on medication, therre are side effects and are bad for the immune system. Good luck. Let me know how things work out. Best, J.

It's a type of yeast infection and I've heard that feeding him yogurt with live and active cultures can help. Also thrush can pass to you if you are breastfeeding and you need to watch for infection. Mom's may need medication. If it's not going away he could be getting it from you. I would talk to a lactation nurse you can just call the hospital and ask to speak to one or your OB.

My oldest daughter had a horrible case of thrush at 9 months, I tried yogurt, some babies have ahard time with it, but if they can handle table food you might be in luck. It has the natural bacteria that helps with the yeast... Worked for me, GOOD LUCK!

Hi H.!

My son also got thrush and it was really bad and reoccurred 2 times. I don't know if you are breast feeding but if you are, you can get the infection on your breasts and it burns like heck and ofcourse decreases your milk production. I was told about gentian violet and Whole Foods said that they do not sell it anymore becuase the FDA said that some parents didn't know how to administer this remedy well and in some cases the babies were poisoned by it or got very ill.

I was given an oral medicine that helped a bit but then they have to give me another type of medication that was an antibiotic that he swallowed and that finally cleared it up. My son was only 1 month old so I couldn't give him yogurt yet. Your baby is now 8 months old and probably can take the yogurt with a bit of probiotics (which they sell the children's formulation at Whole Foods or Wild Oats).

Feel free to contact me if you have any further questions.

Make sure that you are boiling all eatery, silverware bottles pacifiers etc. Also, use a teeth and gum cleanser as often as possible. The less there is to feed the fungus, the weaker it will become. Also, if he is eating foods try yogurt or cottage cheese, natural bacterias in these will fight the bad bacteria.
Good Luck, and as long as he is not having discomfort, natural is indeed the way to go!!
