Throwing up When Seeing Bottle??

This seems bizarre to me. My 10 month old has recently taken to vomiting when he sees his bottle. I usually feed him 4 oz. of Beech Nut or Gerber pureed food before, wait 10 minutes and then attempt to feed him a bottle. It's almost like it's become a reflex with him. He'll see it and then usually vomit up some of the 4 oz. that I just fed him. Anyone else experienced this? I had to change my clothes (and his) 4 times today!!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I've tried the sippy cup numerous times before and all he does is chew on it. He's just not really interested in it yet. I did try the bottle before the pureed food and that seems to have cleared up the issue. Plus, he's getting more fluid this way and I feel that's more important anyway. Thanks again. I continue to push the sippy cup and I guess it'll happen when he's ready.

It could be the smell of the rubber nipple. Start weaning him to the sippy cup. It is not too early, and you could certainly use a break from clearning the same mess over and over again.

maybe he heard us talking about toenails?
I think it's excitement too.

Not sure why he would be doing this could just be a bit too much on his tummy at once from the solids, could be burping that turns into solids coming up. Their digestive systems are still immature at that age.

But you should always offer breastmilk or formula first then solids in between nursings/bottle feedings. Breastmilk or formula is primary nutrition for the entire first year.

And yep, you are better off getting rid of the bottle now and going with sippy cups. That way you won't have a bottle fight getting rid of it when he is a year old.

Try offering the bottle first. Worth a try.

Does he vomit when he sees it on an empty stomach? maybe try giving him one before he eats anything else...or try waiting a little longer in between. Could be that he doesn't want a bottle, could try a cup..? Never had this problem myself.

My son threw up a lot and it turns out he was allergic to milk protein. It didn't happen every time he ate so it made it more confusing. I had to switch formula and then different milk after he turned . (he was on a straw cup at 10 months so it happened with the bottle and the cup). Hope you figure it out. I know it was very upsetting for us as it affected his weight too which became concerning to the doctors. Funny thing was that it didn't seem to bother him.

While I didn't experience this I would take it as a sign that maybe he's ready to try a sippy cup. Put some milk in a sippy cup and see if he'll drink it that way w/o the vomiting.

If he still vomits maybe it's time to drop the formula. I know it sounds early to do that but I woulc convsier exploring all options.

good luck

Maybe he is too full.
Usually.... the thing to do is... give a baby their nursing or bottle FIRST... before... solids.
That is always what our Pediatrician told us.
That is what I did.

Baby's tummies are real small... and if you do give him solids first then a bottle... then wait even 1 hour or 1/2 hour, before giving him something else.

But primarily, as Dori said below... breastmilk/Formula is a baby's PRIMARY source of nutrition... for the 1st year of life. Not solids and not other liquids.

Sounds like he gets so 'excited' to see the bottle he hiccups and it makes him puke. That would be my guess. Excitement.

Have you tried just giving him breastmilk or formula in a cup and ditching the bottles????

If it happens every time he is eating, I'd say it has nothing to do with the bottle, and either you're giving him food that's gone bad or that he has a stomach bug. I wouldn't think of it as vomiting when he sees his bottle, I'd think of it as vomitting 10 minutes after eating his food. If you give him just a bottle and no food, see if it happens.
