Throwing up at 11Months- Reflux? Allergies?

ok so my 11 1/2 month old son started throwing up a few nights a week after nursing. I have been attempting to wean him from BF for a few weeks now- we are down to 2-3 times a day (morning, midafternoon, bedtime)- the longest nursing session being the nighttime feeding before bed. I am usually pretty full by then as trying to slow down milk supply. He will nurse well on both sides and when i put him over my shoulder he will burp and sometimes now he throws up. it does not seem to even phase him- just kinda comes out- but it appears to be alot. he never had reflux problems or spit up at all as a baby so why now? not sure if it is even related to BF- maybe his stomach is upset from foods had during the day?- as he eats 3 meals plus snacks. i have not noticed any particular food that may cause it. i am at a total loss as to the cause. again- he is unphased by it completely but it is starting to concern me b/c it has happened more than once or twice. any ideas, thoughts, etc would be great

What can I do next?

He maybe eating tooo much, cut back some and see if it helps. Childrens stomachs at that age are only the size of a small fist.

I think he is just filling up too much on that last feeding and just doing some spitting up. Burp more often on that last feeding and see if that helps. My son has reflux and it's not something that usually starts at that age.
Hope this helps,
C.

I agree with the other posts....he may be too full. If he had reflux, he would show discomfort with the spitting up. My pedi did not prescribe anything until my baby was crying when she spit up. Once she started doing both, the pedi knew it was reflux and we treated it.

Not sure about the throwing up but I think he should be having more inbetween snacks. I have a Day Care and we have to give them three snacks a day. Smaller meals. They shoudl have breakfast, snack. lunch, snack , dinner, snack before bed. This is on the gov food program I am in. At snacks you serve them one of the four food groups. Such as a fruit or veggie, a grain or dairy. But I give them a granola bar and a fresh fruit or cattor sticks. They suggest water at snacks as well because children need water all day. If we feed them meals and there is a lot of time between then they eat more at meals. This program is to keep childre from over eating and getting the proper antioxidents daily. Good Luck. My son used to throw up but it was at the beginning when we first brought him home. Are you giving him formula? That may be a problem. My grandson ended up in the hospital because of that and all it was was allergic to formula. They put him on goats milk and it solved the problems. G. W

My daughter did that simply because she overate. She just nursed for the sake of nursing and overfilled her stomache. She never lost weight or anything and the doc said as long as she was gaining don't worry. It went away when she was weaned but she does throw up easily.

Hi J.,
It sounds a little strange to me for an almost 1 yr old to be throwing up like that when he's had no previous problems with spitting up or throwing up.

I would definitely have him seen by your pedi. My daughter nursed until 18 mnths and never had that problem.
She also used me as her paci so I'm sure she over ate at times too and never threw up.

Good luck and let us know how things go.

How much solid food is your son eating throughout the day? It may just be that his stomach is too full to hold everything, so it is "rejecting" the last thing he is getting, which is your milk. And he's not being phased by it, because it's not "upsetting" his tummy. (weird, huh?) I don't think it's allergies, b/c allergy symptoms are more likely redness/rashes, "crankiness" (more than usual), itching, and "watery" or "itchy" eyes at this age. Try letting him have the majority of his solid foods earlier in the day, and not so much at his "supper" time, and see if that helps when you're doing his bedtime nursing over the next few days.

Warm fuzzies!

If you are full, you may be having a bit of overactive letdown, which could cause him to spit up a lot.

If you suspect a food allergy, I would start journaling what you and he are eating to see if the throwing up occurs more when certain foods are eaten.

My son has had reflux since very young, and by a year old, your child would probably be showing additional fussiness due to pain and discomfort. But, look for excessive hiccups (this is a very good indicator of reflux). If you talk to your pediatrician, there are medicines for symptoms they can prescribe.

To me...this doesn't sound like reflux...but I'm no doctor. :-)

Definitely mention it to your pediatrician and, if it continues, you should keep a brief journal of when it happened and if there was anything unusual that day (what he may have eaten, etc.) so you can inform the pediatrician.

You should have him checked for Celiac Disease. It is a autoimmune disease. You can read more about it at www.celiac.com. My son was doing similar things, just throwing up at strange times, well we found out after much testing he has Celiac, that was almost four yrs. ago. You may want to look into it. It is becoming more common in small children. My son was only 2 when diagnosed.

Is it all day or only at night? How long has it been going on? I only ask because there is a terrible stomach virus going around right now.
