Those Life-like Dolls for Sale in the Coupon Pamphlets of the Newspaper

So my mom gives me the stacks of coupons that come in her newspaper. I was leafing through them tonight and I saw two different ads for these 'dolls' that are "18 inches" "made of vinyl for life-like skin". It's a doll, I guess, but not one you play with. I think it's kind of like a statue of a baby with tears in it's eyes and one was just of a cute baby. It says on the page "This is not a toy. It is a collectors item."

Can anyone explain to me who would want to buy a life-like statue-like-doll of a baby with tears in it's eyes? It kind of creeps me out. Anyone else think these are the strangest things?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@ Leah - HA. No I did not see that episode. Weird!
@ Marda - I guess that's probably why. Thanks for your serious answer. I suppose they wouldn't waste their money paying for the ad if noone was buying them.

The rest of you had me cracking up.

Sorry Marda P but I'd rather display some salt and pepper shakers or plates on my wall, not a life like replica of a crying baby! I just don't get it either...I already understand how sweet and vulnerable babies are, I don't need it molded in off color vinyl and stored on a shelf :(

I worked a few exhibits with someone who made the dolls. It was an art for her and she was very proud of her work. The last time I talked to her, she was perfecting the various skin tones.

At the end of the show, she piled them all in a basket and hauled them out of there. That was creepy!

They're a collector item. Why would anyone want 50 salt and pepper shakers or plates that can only hang on the wall? Same idea. Tears in the eyes can be viewed as sweet, can remind one of how vulnerable a baby is and help them feel protective. Just a couple of ideas.

Later As I was helping my grandson who had tears in his eyes because he doesn't like to read I had the thought that the tears bring out my tender feelings. I suspect people like the doll because of how it makes them feel tender and protective.

I think these dolls appeal to older women who don't have children. I know I was attracted to them until I had the real thing.

they are called reborn dolls. but i think they are creepy.. the only way i would have one is if it looked identical to my daughter as a baby.

They creep me out too. Did you ever see the episode of Wife Swap (i think that was the show) where the one mom collected those and cared about them more than her own children. She definitely had issues. Its kind of along the same lines as clowns for me.

Not a clue - they creep me out too! I had never actually seen one until I was in my sister-in-law's kitchen many years ago and noticed one on display. I asked her about it and she received it as a gift right after her son was born - the creepy doll and her son were both named Steven.

Yes I've often wondered what the attraction was... although like Leah said Wife Swap featured a woman who collected them so there must be more than just her buying them ;-)

I don't know. I can't understand it. They are weird and creepy, if you ask me. My mother in law has a doll collection. She got a "life-like" doll that represented each of her children. She thinks they are so precious and beautiful. I think I'd be afraid to sleep in the same room with those suckers. I'm not going to die via possessed creepy doll coming to life killing me in my sleep!!

I don't understand people over 10-12 who collect dolls, anyhow. Kind of weirds me out. (I promise I don't mean that to be offensive!!!)
