This One Is About Me!

Since I was pg, I started experiencing the need to constantly clear my throat, as if I had too much mucas in my throat. The problem is, it very rarely clears up. I have had this SINCE I was pg, meaning that it's still going on. Sometimes it can be quite unattractive, seeing that I snort and hack (I don't know how to spit it out, so obviously, I don't) and cough and clear... it sounds really bad when I do it. I even swallow really hard to try and get some movement. Has anyone else had to go through this???? I would really love for someone to truthfully say "hey, me too" and "this is what I did to help it". I'm tired of it.... it sucks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We found out that I'm pregnant again, and that's one reason why it has gotten worse lately. I was told that it gets worse in pregnancy, and the reason it had not gone away from when I was pregnant with Madelyn is because I was still nursing her. I have since tried using Mucinex, and it works quite well.

Hey A.,
I am 42 and have had this problem during and after pregnancy with my past 5 kids. I tried eliminating different foods, and dairy seemed to be a problem but not much. I increased my water and noticed a huge difference. I have 8-12 oz first thing in the morning before my coffee. Then I drink water all day. I may have a soda in the afternoon. This has help tremendously. I know you will notice a difference over night too.

I checked out you myspace and your kids are adorable. Check out mine...

I had excess saliva when I was pregnant, which is actually pretty common. I felt as if I had to constantly clear or swallow. I don't know if that is similar to what you are experiencing? I also had pretty bad morning sickness, and the excess saliva made the problem worse, as constantly swallowing it made me more nauseous.

Allergies can also get worse (or better) while pregnant, so that may have something to do with it.

I've had this too. Sometimes it's worse than at other times.

The food you eat can make a huge difference. I've learned over the years certain things help like before giving a speech you're supposed to eat sliced red apples because the acidity clears the throat and helps prevent cotton mouth. Also, anything that coats your throat with sugar or oils can cause flem to build up. Soda coats your vocal chords with sugar and can cause you to irritate. (I used to work with singers so I picked up a few things from them vocal coach specialists) If you use cough drops, use sugar free. Milk will cause flem and so will any dairy product. Drink water with your meals or after you finish your meal. You can probably even do a web search for vocal chords and flem and find more tips. If you keep clearing your throat, it will damage your vocal chords and your voice permanantly.

I have asthma so I have the feeling all the time. You can probably get some kind of inhaler over the counter. But if you can't find one go to the doctor and let them know that you are having this problem. It could bne that you've gotten allergies too. Try some claritan(it's in a blue packet in the meds isle at walmart). that will take the congestion away. You can also try getting a humidifier. Put your head over it and let them steam hityour face. The heat from the steam will loosen it up so you can cough it out. But if none of that works go to the doctor and let them know you may need to get an inhaler.
