Get a FLY lady toilet brush, those things are awesome & use bleach. Our toilet was getting really stained & after I switched to this rubba-scrubba style brush, they have stayed clean.
Not to be gross...but I need answers. What is the best way to clean grime (black stuff) along the upper inside rim of a toilet. I need these toilets spotless. Thanks!

"The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. It will remove any stain and grime you've got in your toilet. Be sure to open a window and turn on the fan....it's seriously strong stuff.
Use bleach OR Soft Scrub (not both at once or you'll die from the fumes!) and a scrub brush. If there are hard water stains left over after that, use a pumice stone as Jim suggested. That will get the toilet sparkling clean and white.
A pumice stone will do the trick.
I use an old toothbrush and bleach or scouring powder. Make sure you keep the toothbrush with the bowl brush so no one uses it for anything else.
Wear rubber gloves and use a hand held scrub brush with some elbow grease and some comet (or a brillo pad). Be careful with strong cleaning products, you want a lot of ventilation with bleach in that small area.
I too use "the works."
