Thinking About a Diet Change, What Can I Do?

I have a 2.5 year old that has been having CONSTANT upper respiratory infections and ear infections. We've spent the last 6 months on various antibiotics for this stuff. She is in daycare and I can't take her out-I have to work and I need the flexibility that daycare offers. She takes high doses of vitamin C and I've tried out echinacea as well as sambucol...these have helped a little bit but once she's already sick they don't seem to do anything.

So I've been doing some reading and one thing that I know-this kid is CRAZY about dairy products and everything I've been reading says that kids that tend to have these chronic infections need to stay away from dairy. But I mean, this kid DEMANDS milk!

Has anyone here switched from dairy to another milk, like goat's milk or anything else with good results? Anything else that you've started or stopped feeding your kiddo that's dramatically improved their respiratory health? Any herbal or home remedies that you've tried that have helped you get off the anti-biotic hamster wheel??

I sure would appreciate any feedback or ideas you might have, thanks Mamas!

What can I do next?

It sounds like she very well could be allergic to dairy. I know some people use soy milk, almond milk, goat's milk, etc. Can't comment on any of those as I haven't tried them. You might also try limiting her sugar intake including fruit juices.
And, IMO, she needs to be off the antibiotics. They obviously aren't working anyway. You need to build her immune system so her body can fight off these bugs. As another poster suggested a good quality probiotic is one important step. And, in her case, after all those antibiotics, probiotics are a must.
If you have some free time some Saturday morning log on to www.projoba.net/webcast at 11:00 AM CT. Adrienne Gold goes through the entire Projoba product line and explains how they help with allergies, the immune system, detox, weight loss, etc. Her specialty is special needs children. If that time doesn't work for you go to www.projoba.net and look around. The 7 Min. Neo-Nutrition Audio Overview by Dr. Corey Gold on the front page is a great place to start.

Hi C.,
This topic could keep me going for awhile so I will give a brief comment and you can contact if more info is needed, okay....

Yes, it is most likely a food intolerance. Milk could be the culprit but in my lil' ones cases it was other things too. The thing is, the foods may not have to be eliminated forever, but long enough to repair her gut. We went to Dr. Bain in Frisco for a second opinion on the reason our girls were all of a sudden having ear infections...she informed me that 95% of ear infections are a food intolerance. 95%? Yes, 95% and lo and behold, we removed the foods that were offending for four months and now everything is added back in their diets except cheese (big reaction on this one) and we rotate the foods better and so forth. NO EAR INFECTIONS SINCE!!! My girls have been on ONE antibiotic in 16 months due to strep. I am so amazed and have switched my kids to Dr. Bain for good, even though I live in McKinney and pass 200 pedi's on my way. LOVE her and her philosophy. She is a MD, but life has taught her other ways as well besides medicine. She only uses two labs---I used Immuno Labs (they guarantee their results) and have been super pleased with the results. I even had me tested for GI issues and it has corrected that issue too!!! Can't say enough about this doctor or the testing...I seriously could go on and on...contact if you would like more info.

I'd consider a good multivitamin. This one has a prebiotic.

and a good probiotic, which will help build the immune system.

I'm a big vitamin C person myself, but too much can upset the stomach, so keep that in mind. Also, if you take too much the body will just sluff it off and you will be wasting your money.

C.,
I see that Patty W has already told you about Shaklee. I had the same problems with my children. The Shaklee vitamins made an unbelievable difference. They have just introduced Shakleebaby multivitamin that will be even better.
Good luck to you!

Hello C.,

Yes, milk can be the culprit. Has she been tested for any allergies? because if she's allergict to ragweeds, she can't have echinacea or chamomile. She could have astragalus (check Herbs 4 kids at sprouts). there is almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, rice milk... try by replacing 1 ounce of the cow milk w/ whichever 'milk' you pick for 3 days. then replace 2 ounces of her milk for another 3 days. and so on until you transition her to the new 'milk'. good luck! and keep trying. ~C.~

Hi C.,

I feel for you--my son is a little younger (almost 2) but had constant ear infections/respiratory infections (led to pneumonia eventually) and was always on antibiotics. Turns out he has asthma.
We got tubes in his ears and that helped SO SO much, although obviously it'd be better to just eliminate the cause, rather than going through that. We actually took him out of daycare, which I think helped most of all. (He's probably going back soon, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed...we'll see). He is drinking goat's milk now, too, bc I heard that it's a lot less irritating than cow's milk. He loves it!
I would suggest getting her allergy tested if you are able to. It could be an allergy to an animal or dust or something. Also, if you have any reservations about how clean her daycare is, maybe you could check out other daycares? My son's daycare was not that great in my opinion, and I eventually noticed that the infants and toddlers shared a changing station (there was only a half wall between the two classrooms)...so twice as many germs were being passed around!
When my son was in the hospital for all this junk, the respiratory therapist told me to be sure that he's never around any smoke, even second hand (like a daycare teacher or something).

Anyways, I'm sorry for your situation!
