Yes, some merchants opt for the extra verification. The information is sent to your bank and if any of it is inaccurate they will decline the sale.
I made a purchase at Toys R Us on-line and when I went to check out I put in all of my information. Then a seperate screen popped up asking to verify my card. After I entered my billing zip code, last four of my social, card exp date and the code from the back I noticed that it said veritfy now and vertify later. I deleted my info and hit the later button.
Has anyone else had this pop up when trying to make a purchase? If so, what did you do?
SHould I contact Toys R Us and ask them if they have this on their site?
I called Toys R Us and they said that it was ligit. That it is something my bank has put on there. Wow that would have been a crappy holiday for us.
Thanks for all the quick responses. Love you all!

I haven't purchased anything on Toys R Us on-line, but Walmart.com has this. I think it's called Verisign? The first time I didn't fill it out, and my purchase did not go through so I had to fill it out. Don't know if this helps.
Added: If you deleted your info and didn't send it, I can't see how you could have anything to worry about. Just typing info into the field and not sending it isn't going to allow for anyone else to see it.
I would contact both Toys R Us and your bank. There may be a phishing scam going on or it might be legit from TRU.
You should also contact your bank immediately if you think your card has been compromised.
I've had to verify my billing zip code but not the last digits of my SSN before. Usually they ask for the code on the back of the card (the last 3 or 4 digits), not your SSN.
Yes I have had this pop up many times. It's for extra verification do not worry.
Was it a Visa card? Visa has an extra step for security on some sites and I believe TRU is one of them. All it does is compares the information and verifies that the information is correct. If something is wrong then the transaction will no go thru. I placed an order on Ticketmaster the other day and got the same thing.
I have had to do this on different sites - including ticketmaster. It is a protection measure to make sure, you are using your card and not someone else.
I typically don't buy things from TRU online, but I wouldn't doubt they do this, too.
To ease your mind, call your local store now - in the middle of the day when most folks are at work, but the manager is in the store and ask. Never hurts to be safe. I would not freak out and immediately cancel my card though. It does sound just like the verification process to prevent fraudulent charges.
It happened to on Best Buy's site. No biggie.
I never use a debit card for online purchases. I get scared they could just clean out our bank account. Using a credit card protects you, I think they will pay most if not all fraudulent charges. Some sites actually keep your account number for future purchases, makes me nervous. You should use a credit card and then just pay off the balance monthly.
FYI ~ debit cards and credit cards have the same amount of protection.
Glad it worked out ok for you. I know I have ordered from TRU several times this year and I don't remember putting in the last four of my SS#, but I do remember having to put in everything else.
One thing my husband suggested is to look at the top of the screen, where you usually see an http address, when you are giving information. He suggests not doing any financial transaction online if you don't see a legit http address and a padlock symbol, which will mean that the information is encrypted.
We spent quite a bit of time trying to buy my FIL an Outback Steakhouse gift card simply because of this lack of encryption. My husband works in internet security and is baffled as to why businesses would allow a less-than-secure service provider to sell their gift cards for them in this way, without encryption. We finally decided to go through another vendor using our Pay Pal account.
I have never used a debit card online but I know for sure that in many credit card purchases online I have never been asked for the last digits of my Social Security number. I find that suspicious. I would phone Toys R Us and possibly the bank, too; I might alert them of your concerns. But they may want to temporarily freeze the account of that debit card if they believe someone else has the data to get into the account!
Just monitor your activity, suspicious purchases and the like. No need to freak out unless something happens.
You wont be responsible for the charges, its happened to me and my husband like 7 times.
I get this also via certain vendors. Some cards require that you have a separate verification process. You should see the logo of your bank on the screen as well.
