Think I Had an Asthma Attack Last Night

I think I had an asthma attack in the night. I'm not sure if that's what it was but I was coughing a lot and could hardly breathe. I just didn't feel right at all. I've had asthma for many years and never had an episode like this before. I woke my hubby up at midnight and told him to take me to the ER. I don't like to go so he knew something wasn't right. I tried getting my purse together and I almost blacked out. I got all sweaty and cold real fast. I had to sit for a second and then it passed but the tightness of my throat was there for awhile yet. I was worried because I started my allergy shots last week and was given an epipen incase that happened to me. Not sure of why I would all of a sudden need one of those after all these years it was scary. Maybe the nurse just thought it was time. I was going to go in for my second shot this morning too. My ribs hurt from all the coughing I suppose and after that possibly being an asthma attack I think I should just go tomorrow. I am so tired. It was the scariest time in my life. Should I call my Dr about this? If so, my reg Dr or my allergy dr or the nurse who gives the shots? I feel awful today! It wasn't a squeezing pain in the center of my chest which is a symptom of a hearty attack.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The Dr. gave me a better inhaler for someone who needs it as many times a day as I do. He also gave me different pills for the acid reflux. He said that could be playing a part in it too. Why am I having this pain in my left shoulder since I've been home? Scary.

You might have had a heart attack. Women's symptoms are very different than typical "left arm" that you always hear. Please google womens heart attack and see if you match up. In my unprofessional opinion you night. So worth checking out so please call.

You poor thing! There's nothing as scary as not being able to breathe (except, maybe, standing helplessly by watching someone you love not being able to breathe).

I'd start with the nurse who gave you the shot. If she blows off your concern, then I'd call the doctor. Don't dismiss this.

Hug -- and remember, in through your nose; out through your mouth. Slow and easy and try to relax. (yeah, like THAT's easy when you can't get any air in!)

I would go in for your appointment this morning and ask both the nurse AND the allergist doctor about your experience. It doesn't sound like an asthma attack, but it DOES sound like an allergic reaction that compromised your respiratory system. If you were given an epi-pen, it's because they knew there was a possibility of a reaction and I'm sure they knew you had asthma which greatly increases the severity of a reaction and makes your airway close much faster.

If you had used the epi-pen, you would have had almost immediate relief from the coughing and respiratory problems because it reduces the swelling of your airway. It is basically a shot of adrenalyn and is harmless so don't be afraid to use it if this happens again. It buys you the time you need to get to the ER. You still need to go to the ER even if you do feel much better because they will want to monitor you once the epi-pen wears off and make sure you aren't going to head back into anaphylaxsis.

They should have been very clear about why you were given the epi-pen and how/when to use it. I'm sorry you had such a scary experience - we've had LOTS of asthma attacks and allergic reactions (severe peanut allergy) between my son and myself so we know all too well what you were going through. Go in this morning and ask questions of everyone BEFORE getting that shot again!

Definitely see the allergy doc and don't get another allergy shot til you do. Describe the symptoms including the squeezing chest pain so he can refer you to a cardiologist if necessary.

I had allergy shots for years and they really helped me. But someone at my mom's clinic died from a reaction after getting one. Learn how and when to use the epi pen. If you have asthma, you are at greater risk for a life-threatening reaction to the shots.

Call the allergist's office first and do it as soon as possible. It sounds like a reaction to the shot to me but I'm not a doctor. What did they tell you at the ER? anything from them about what they think happened?

I have had asthma for years but that does not really sound like an asthma attack. You can't really cough. Asthma attacks make it difficult to breathe out. It sounds like a full blown allergic reaction. I would definitely call the doctor. Did you go to the ER??

I get exactly as you described following bad colds and my doctor prescribes me prednisolone and albuterol and I start feeling much better. He calls it cough variant asthma.

Oh my oldest has been on singular for years and he constantly clears his throat because it feels itchy/scratchy I think its a possible side effect.
