Without a doubt - the Exergen temporal artery thermometer - sold at places like WalMart for about $45- bit pricey, but worth every penny. Don't know what I would do without it. Google it to research what it is all about.
Does anyone have any suggestions for forehead thermometers that work well? My boys won't let me do it rectally anymore and are too young for the mouth ones....
Thank you all so much for your advice. Before sending this, I did buy a Mobi ear/temporal thermometer but I haven' had a chance to try it yet. If i don't like it I plan on buying the Exergen one you were all talking about. (and yes I have tried the digital under the arm. I just wasn't sure how accurate that is and my boys are wiggly)
Thanks again!

My older son used to scream at any sort of thermometer, even one held under his arm. We eventually bought an Exergen Temporal Artery thermometer--you just scan across the forehead. It's more expensive than the other types and it takes a little bit of playing around to get used to it, but it was more than worth it. Best price I've seen is at Costco.com. Good luck!
Get the ear thermometer - it's quick and accurate.
I use the digital one under the armpit for my 17 month old. Works fine unless extremely fidgity.
Hi Julie,
I use the Exergen thermometers at work (Miriam Hosp), and they are super accurate. I know they sell them at CVS, and Walgreens. Good luck.
There are digital thermometers now that you can put under the arm. A lot easier.
How about ones you put in their ears?
Our Ped used them and it takes just a few seconds to get a read!
My oldest started having his temp taking oral at the doctors office areound age 3. They used to tell him to give it a "Kiss" For the house I purchased the thermometer with the quickest time so that no matter where its used it doens't have to be there long I have to active boys that don't like to be still for too long. I have never had much success with ear themometers I had 2 different kinds I found that the temporal thermometers they have at most hospitals and dr offices work well and quick. I would spend the extra cash and go with one of them its more acurate than taking it under the arm.
Hi Julie,
same issue here, until our pediatrician told me to measure under-arm. So i use a normal thermometer in the armpit of my 2.75 y o. Works great!
good luck,
D.
I use an ear thermometer. It was expensive, but it works well.
Hi, I have never used forhead ones but I use the ear ones, they work great, or u can try just using a regular thermometer under the arm.
We had the same issue (my daughter will not let me do it rectally anymore). She had a seizure this summer from a high temp so I wanted to get a thermometer that was accurate and easy to use so that I could take her temp often if I needed to. So we got the Exergon Temporal Artery themometer and it has worked great for us and just as accurate as rectal.
use a regular therometer and take their tempatures under the arms. Just remember that a person's temp here runs a bit low compared to the rest of the body.
I'm with everyone else on this. I've used an oral, digital thermometer under the armpit and add a degree. It's a whole lot easier than fighting to keep it in their mouth :-)
The thermometers that work through the ear are easy and quick. My suggestion is to do each ear everytime. My sons temp runs a little different in each ear and by doing both I get a more accurate reading.
Hi again Julie
I use the digital one under the arm and add a degree. You could also get a digital ear one for your 3yr old. But I never used the forehead strips.
Try the underarm, it doesnt have to go in their mouth. I also use an ear thermometer.
We use the ear ones and they work well for us!
What about an ear thermometer?
I bought one from CVS and it is the CVS brand one. About $20 some odd dollars and works great. Only takes 6 seconds on the temple. Pretty darn acurate too.
Hi Julie
I have a great forhead thermometer. Its put out by Exergen and they call it a "Temporal Scanner / Infared Thermometer". It literally is just a swipe on the forhead (tempal to tempal) and it reads an accurate temp. The only catch is that it is $100. A bit much I think but I had put it on my registry when I was pregnant because a friend had recommended it. They are sold at Babies r us. Best of luck!

I use a temporal thermometer. they are just as accurate as rectal and you can even take the temp in seconds while a sick kid is sleeping
You could try taking their temperature under their arm. I have done that with my son since he was a newborn because for some reason I just couldn't ever get it to work rectally (it always read about 96 degrees no matter what I did!)
Use a digital thermometer and place the bulb in the deepest part of their armpit, close the arm over it, and hold in place. I usually have my son sit on my lap and them hug him to hold it in. Wait until the thermometer reaches it's temp.
The thing to remember is that underarm always reads cooler than rectal or mouth. If you are reporting a temp to the doctor be sure to say it's been taken underarm. And for your own estimate (seeing if they have a fever) add 1 full degree to the temp.
Hope that helps!
