I have to say that I agree with Annette. The Exergen has been amazing. I used to try to get a consistent reading with the 2 brands of ear thermometores on my girls when they were healthy so I could learn. They're both terrible. The Exergen has been a dream in comparison. You can find them at Walgreens as well.

I too was wondering which ones are good out there. I read about the Exergen ones that people recommended and I found this site that give a $5.00 mail in rebate if you buy one... Just thought I would pass the link along to you, or anyone else thats is going to buy on and wants to save $$$...

You have to click in this paragraph on the right to get the rebate:

If your pediatrician has run out of TAT-2000C Educational Pamphlets, just click here or on the image of the pamphlet below and download a full copy, including the rebate coupon.

I purchased from Wal-Mart Pharmacy Dept. the brand (Exergen) a TemporalScanner Thermometer. It was more than $30. dollars but less than $40. they are recomended by all the Nurses at the Clinics that my family goes to. They are very accurate and you don't need probe covers just a battery. You can take the temp. even while person or child is asleep with no discomfort of putting in the ear of a child with ear infection. It is worth the money.

I HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend an Exergen Temoral Artery Thermometer. It's the type they now use in hospitals. All it requires is a quick glide across the forehead and it gives an accurate reading. It's so easy you can measure a temperature while your child is sleeping and he/she won't even notice. I got mine from Costco for just under $30.

After talking to my sister-in-law who is a nurse, she told me they do not like the ear thermometers because they are not accurate. I have one that Safety 1ST makes and I love it. You can either take your babies temp under the arm or at the temple. I think I found it at Walmart and it was $20-$30. My son is 18 months old and will sit very still for the ten seconds it takes to read his temp.
Wish you luck.

The best and most accurate on the market today is the temporal thermometers...you just quickly scan them across your child's forehead!!! Here's a link to it:

We have a thermometer that is vicks brand and it takes about 7 seconds under the arm, 5 sec under the tounge and 3 sec rectally. It seems to be very accurate and it is very fast so that is the bonus. It is only about 15 dollars. Hope you can find one!

We LOVE the Vicks thermometer! It has a color changing screen and our 2 year old will actually sit still just to see what color it will be!! I think I paid about $7 for it and it works great.

Hi A.

I have 4 children of my own, with my oldest being almost 11 and I do inhome daycare. I have tried several different thermometers and the method I like best is just a regular priced digital thermometer and use it under the childs arm and then just add 1 degree. Just place the thermometer in the center of the armpit way at the top (snuggle it in there, but not so hard that the child says it hurts) and then hold the thermometer and just gently hold their arm in down to their side so the thermometer stays in place. It's the cheapest method and the method I have found the most accurate for home use.

We ran into the same issue. Although our children are older now, we bought one for the forehead at Costco. It's very similar to what the physician offices are using. The cost was $30.

I also have the thermoscan thermometer that goes across the forehead and love it. I can take my boys temp very fast and while they are sleeping without waking them.
