Hello moms, I'm thinking about buying the thermal curtains and was wondering if they really work. Obviously there are holes all around, like in between the curtain rod and the actual window, there is like a 1/2 foot gap, won't the cold go through there? Are these curtains really worth buying?

We bought room darkening thermal roman shades for the windows in each of our kids' rooms. I think they work a little. Not great, but better than if there was nothing there.

I used to work at Country Curtains (you can order from them online or they have a store in Naperville). They have insulated curtains and yes, they work. You have to use a rod that doesn't stick out so far from the window - 6 inches seems too far unless you have blinds on the outside of the window frame. If you go into the store, they can show you how to measure, what size and you have only a certain amount of colors to chose from. The lining blocks out the cold and keeps it mostly contained it and the window. In the summer, it works the same way but keeps the hot sun out so they do serve a purpose and help with heating bills and AC, especially if the window/s is large and faces the west or east. Good luck, I have purchased many curtains and other things from them. They guarantee their curtains so if you don't like them, you can take them back!

I've seen insulating curtains in catalogs like Home and Hearth. The best pair of curtains I had were heavy duty silk that were lined and were very generous on both sides of the window. It sealed up the window housing pretty good. Having a heavy curtain does help, so I would think the liner, if heavy enough, would work too!

I've seen at Joann's Fabrics an insulating fabric that looks like you just iron it on to the backs of existing curtains. Might be an option if you already have curtains and don't want the expense of new ones.

We have cellular blinds that are lined with Mylar (that silver stuff they make balloons out of). They were quiet expensive but they definitely keep the rooms warmer in winter and cooler in summer. I would say they are worth the price and they look nice. Plus, the one we got for my sons room has a circular pull so there are no hanging strings for them to get wrapped up in. Plus way less prone to hold in the dust as curtains, don't know if that's an issue for you?? But something to think about.
I only got them for the 3 bedrooms on the back side of the house beceuase it's a southern exposure and was getting so darn hot in the summer!!! All in all a good purchase.
