My daughter got a little cold virus a couple of weeks ago and still has this lingering couch. It is mostly at night and it is a deep cough. She seems to get this every year and I hate it for both her and my son. I think I will be taking them both to the doctor today, just to make sure nothing else is going on. but I wanted to see if any of you have a suggestions for me. I do the humidifier, elevate head of bed, honey and vapor rub. Anything else I can try?

What can I do next?

take note of when exactly this happens..my friends daughter got this cold cough thing every year in October.. right when they turned on the heat.. the kid was allergic to the dust that the furnace was blowing around.

I think they did steroid nasal sprays to calm down the sinus draininage.. and things were better..

Could be seasonal allergies.

It's allergies. My daughter is suffering right now. I will call her doctor today as this has been going on for about 3 weeks. You should talk to you doctor about having your daughter tested for allergies.

If she gets it every year, I'd be thinking allergies might be involved.
Some allergy meds (Claritin, Zyrtek or Allegra) might help head this off.
Have her use a neti pot with warm (not hot) saline to rinse out her nose several times a day.
In the mean time, you can try this thing (it works wonders for us):

Also - try her on an expectorant - like Mucinex or Robitussin - to keep the mucus thinned out and easier to cough out.
It's important she keep up her fluids.
Do NOT give her anything to 'dry her up' - no decongestants - they only thicken the mucus and make it much harder to cough the stuff up.
A heating pad on low on her chest and throat at night might help too.
You can use this (but around her chest instead of her back):

One thing you might consider is having your ducts cleaned. I imagine, if you are in IL, you have had your heat on once or twice already.

Just a thought!

Sounds like bronchitis. All my colds turned into this - headed right for the chest where they lingered for 3-4 weeks at a clip. It's worse at night partly because she's tired, and also when she lies down. It also means that she probably doesn't sleep well due to coughing, and that lack of sleep has an impact on future health.

Vapor Rub is of limited effect other than some possible comfort. It's pretty unproven even though people like to do it because it feels like there's at least something to do against this stubborn cough. Honey can help soothe a sore throat, but if her cough is from deeper down, it's not going to do anything for the bronchial inflammation.

I did cellular nutrition and my problems went away. I don't get colds anymore, and so there's nothing to go down into the bronchial tubes. In the past 2 years, I have added in the new anti-inflammatory that's plant based. It helps with immune system boosting as well.

If this is viral, there's nothing the doctor can do other than treat the symptoms with cough suppressants. I know you are frustrated. I have friends who had their little kids on nebulizers and inhalers too, until they got to the point where they were able to prevent all of this. It's about immune system support, I'm afraid. It's much harder to treat after the illness than it is to prevent the illness to begin with.
