So, this question is far less important than most, but hopefully it will be a fun one for some of you. I am going "out with the girls" to an upscale restaurant next week for the first time in far too long. I am not a drinker, and I haven't had much more than the occasional glass of wine in the last 6 years of conception, pregnancy, and braastfeeding. I want to order a nice cocktail but I need suggestions.
I don't want to have a fancy "kids" drink with an umbrella but I don't want an old-lady drink either. What is trendy these days and befitting a 30-something woman? FYI, I like tart tastes and don't want to taste the alcohol - no vodka on the rocks for me - :)
Just wanted to comment on the fun request! ...and I KNOW how you feel... I've been permanently pregnant or breast feeding for almost seven years (4 kids)... now it's OVER! I need to go out, too! (I know NOTHING of cocktails)
Good for you! HAVE FUN!

Cosmopolitans are fun. They are vodka and cranberry and come in a Martini glass so they are very sheek looking. They are a bit strong though so if you're a light-weight right now it may be a bit much.

You've been virtually alcohol free for the past 6 years. I would suggest sticking to wine. I think anything else may be too strong for you or "creep" up on you. You could also ask the bartender as soon as you get there.

And, you don't have to order a drink at all if you don't feel like it. If you don't have a great desire for a specific drink, then having nothing before the meal is OK too.

At rock bottom brewery I had a key lime pie martini and it was delicious. My friend also gets a french martini when we go out. It looks girly and elegant. Have a ball!

I use to be able to drink anything in my collage days. Now everything gives me a headache except for a glass of wine (White, Zinfandel or Riesling). A Margarita is always in fashion (stay away from the strawberry ones if you don't like sweet). A Screwdriver is simple (orange juice and vodka, but you'll notice the vodka). A Daiquiri is good, too. I loved Pina Colada's, but they can run pretty sweet. If you are feeling adventurous, why not tell the bartender your taste preference and let him surprise you. Mixed drinks can be expensive, you might want to check the cocktail menu and see what specials are going on.

a Mojito is good -- it has rum, but you won't be able to taste it. It's lime and mint... good and not frilly-silly. Have fun!

I cannot stand the taste of alcohol. The one drink that I have ever been able to drink is a Midori sour. It tastes like watermelon. I have heard you can also get a Midori daqueri. A friend who doesn't like the taste of alcohol likes those.

I prefer a pomegranite mojito. It's got a little more sweetness than a traditional mojito becuz of the pomegranite juice. I like them so much I learned to make them at home. Enjoy !

Try a midori sour or a Tom Collins. Both taste good but not too much alcohol and they're not cheesy to ask for. Enjoy!

Hummmm......their are several options but I would go with a new drink called "Nuvo" on the rocks, it's made with Vodka and it's pink so it makes you look real interesting and sexy! It has a nice tart smooth taste so I think it's perfect. 2nd alternative and a sure winner Desirono (spelling) on the rocks with lemon or lime. It's a smooth brandy a little sweet but the lemon or lime cuts the sweetness. If you like creamy drink try a "white russian." I could go on & on....not a drinker but I love to pair drinks with food. Good Luck & have fun! 2 drink limit to get home safe.....

I don't drink a lot, either - I can't stand the taste of alcohol. Sounds like you're about the same way!
Try an amaretto sour. It isn't as "tart" as it sounds if it is made right, and you can't taste the alcohol at all. It is very sweet-tasting, though.

Malibu bay breeze is a good drink for someone who doesn't drink often. It's malibu rum (or any coconut rum) with pineapple and cranberry. Coconut rum is about half as strong as regular drinks, about 20 proof as opposed to 40 proof. You can drink and not get wasted, plus the juice wards off a hangover. There is nothing worse than little kids and a hangover.
Have fun!

try a sour apple martini. Tastes great, a little tart, but sweet enough to disguise the alcohol taste (and it doesn't come with an umbrella). A cosmopolitan is also good.

Wow, I was just the opposite. 2 hours after getting home from the hospital with my 3rd, I 'offered' to go to the neighborhood Italian Restaurant to pick up dinner, and have a drink while waiting! It had been a LONG 9 months! I love the suggestions for mojitos and martinis. But do pace yourself. Be sure to drink it with an appetizer or meal since you've not had a drink in a while.

Have a Mojito! It is muddled mint, simple syrup, rum and lime. No umbrella and no strong alcoholic taste. If you like Sprite, you'll like this. Mojitos are still trendy with women of our age. (ha!)
You might also like a Whiskey Sour. No umbrella and has a really great slightly sour/sweet taste. It is not very trendy, but it isn't an old lady drink, either.

I like martinis myself, my last girls night we went to a martini bar and they had a ton of different kinds and you could get the small sample ones-3 for $10. We all chose different ones and sampled each others as well. It was a good way to try to discover what we might like. They all had descriptions of what was in them. I also like amaretto sours and mainly fruity drinks. They have a drink called the shark bite at Joe's Crab shack that I love. I'm not much of a hard alcohol person so more often when I drink it's wine or beer. Hope you have a blast! And play it safe with the ride home!

I see that an Amaretto Sour and Mojito were both suggested which is what I would have said but I'll throw 1 more on the pile. Try a Baybreeze if you like cranberry juice or a Seabreeze if you like grapefruit juice. I don't like the taste of alcohol but these just taste like juice. I have also been known to have the bartender just keep adding juice. The girls don't know - you aren't the killjoy of the party and you don't get wasted drunk!

One of my favorite drinks is chambord (which is a raspberry liquour) and sour. It is tart, and just a little sweet, and you can't taste the alcohol. Its not very strong so you wont get drunk on one or two. A great drink for a night out.

Have a great time with the girls. On occassion, I go out with the girls - maybe once every other month. And while I am not a big drinker, I do enjoy a drink with my friends. You can't go wrong with a martini - I usually go for the fruity kind, either pomegranate, raspeberry, grapefruit, or lychee.
Have a great time.

I was a bartender for almost 10 years and often spent a good deal of time talking to customers about what their tastes were and what they were looking for in "the perfect drink." If you get to a bar when it's not too busy, I'd recommend budgeting a little time to talk to the bartender. They will know what ingredients they have and what they can make to best suit your tastes.
When I go out and want a beverage to sip on, the Midori Sour or Melonball are favorites of mine. A Blue Motorcycle or "Blue Bike" is a classic turn on the Long Island Iced Tea. Tasty and blue... always popular, but a little stronger. The trick is always to find a good bartender. Even popular, seemingly foolproof drinks can go horribly wrong is not mixed properly. Stick to wine, beer, or liquor. Don't mix. Good luck.

I don't know if this one was just at the one bar I had it in or a common one (I'm in the same boat as you, been pregnant and breastfeeding so long I'm out of touch with the cocktail scene), but if you like tart you could ask for an apple jolly rancher. It's some kind of martini I think made with sour apple schnapps.
Personally I'm more partial to the sweet when it comes to mixed drinks and I love, love, love white russians. The way bars mix them you can't taste the alcohol at all. I also like buttery nipples, especially since the alcohol content is so low you can't really get drunk on them even if you try! lol!
