The First Food

I have been trying to add in the rice cereal since my son is 5 months and has his first tooth. It has been helping him sleep better at night, too. However, he fusses during the whole feeding. I have tried different consistencies and temperatures. Is there something that I'm doing wrong? He was giving me all the signs of wanting to eat: intently watching me as I was eating and making "chewing" motions as I was chewing. (It was actually giving me a complex!)
I was trying to increase the solid feedings to morning and night with just breastfeeding during the day, but I'm not sure if he's ready yet. How will I know?
I am mixing it only with breastmilk since he doesn't take formula. I tried once with water as well and that didn't go over well.
Any suggestions? Or is this fussing normal?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok so I tried some smashed banana tonight and added in some of the rice cereal and probiotics on top of it. It was a HIT! So apparently my son doesn't like foods that taste like cardboard! Go figure. Probably why he was "making" me eat foods that were spicy or had a lot of flavor while I was pregnant! Thank you for responding to my question! You mommies are the best resource I have. :O)

Maybe try the baby oatmeal. With both of my kids I only gave them rice cereal a couple of times and then went to oatmeal and they seemed to like it better. The rice cereal seemed so gummy and icky to me but I realize its baby food :) Good luck.

None of my boys like rice cereal, no matter what I mixed it with. I can't say I blame them, have you ever tried to eat that stuff? YUCK! Try giving him something else. All my boys loved baby food, but couldn't eat the rice cereal. My 3rd son ate an entire jar of carrots the first time we introduced solid food to him. :-)

Now that you know that your son is okay eating rice cereal, you might want to add another puree for flavor, especially given that you say he was not a fan of the cereal when mixed with water. Maybe some carrots or very ripe banana (so that it is sweet)? Also, my son never ate the cereals or very many purees for that matter. He did not like the texture. Five months is pretty young still, so I wouldn't worry too much. You might want to hold off on the rice cereal for a week or so. If nothing has changed in a couple more months, there could be other things going on (none of which is terribly serious), but I really would not worry too much at this point. It doesn't sound like you are doing anything wrong; it just sounds like you have a baby :) You might want to buy "Child of Mine" by Ellyn (Ellen?) Satter. Many pediatricians and pediatric nutritionists recommend this book, and I found it to be a lifesaver. It is basically an instruction manual for how to feed your child so that he/she develops a healthy relationship with food. It is a truly wonderful book.

Try bananas or the red vegetables. Those were my daughters favorite.

he may just not like it. My daughter prefers her cereal with bananas, pear, sweet potato or peaches (her favorite). you can also try different types of cereal. I think the oatmeal tastes better (I have this rule that I won't feed her anything that I haven’t tried so I've become quite the coinsure of baby food ;-) Also the brown rice cereal has a nice flavor (comparatively anyway).

i would back off for a few days and reintroduce it again. my son is almost a year and one day he loves pears and the next he doesn't...so they change pretty often and mood plays a huge part. just take a break from solids all together for a few days.
