DS's 1st B-day party has come and passed. I'd like to have him put a few scribbles on the thank you cards we'll be sending. We've received similar notes in the past, and I think its darling.
Never having had him "write" as yet, what do you recommend we start out with? Marker, fat crayons, something else altogether?
Any tips for how to contain the mess?

Crayons! He's going to want to color EVERYTHING... and crayons pretty much stay on the paper ;) Fat crayons are best!! I still use fat crayons, LOL
Another thought. We put baby handprints on our thank you notes with us writing his name below. When he gets older, we are going to allow him to scribble below. Of course, we are the same goofy people who have our Pug "sign" our Christmas cards in the same fashion. Paw print with name below. Personally I get a kick out of the handprints as they show growth.
Get those triangular shaped crayons! Best for the little guys.
I love the idea! And I love the answers you have gotten. Either markers or crayons would work, but you could put a sheet of paper under the card to protect your table from stray scribbles.
for our twin's 1st bday thank yous we used crayons. I consisdered handprints with paint, but wasn't brave enough - instead i put outlines of their hands on each card in crayon. Since i didn't want to have to trace two wiggly hands on every card, i traced them once, cut them out and used that as templates to trace on each card, then let them color it a little.

I would stick with Washable crayons first! But what I always did also was let the scribble on the plain side of the card and you Help them write their name on the correct side of the card so they are learning the letters at the same time. :)
Either one will work--Crayola washables (crayons & markers) are wonderful! I also like to ask my girl what she's drawing so I can "caption" for the recipient. Oh, and sometimes I'll trace her hand and let her color it in. We do this on b-day thank you cards AND cards we're sending to others (especially if they're "from" her--i.e. To Gramma).

Fat crayons are the easiest for a 1 year old to use. One suggestion is to go to Staples (or any supply store) and get card paper. The kind you would use if you were printing your own cards at home. This way the front of the card is blank also. Your child can draw a pretty picture on the front of the card and you could put your personal thank you message inside the card with a brief note letting the recipient know your child did the drawing on the front.
