A.K.
Had one for 2 years and hated it! It depressed where we laid in it to sleep, so that it was like a nest and it was hard to move out of the depressions. Also, it was as hard as a rock (and cold!) in the winter.
Have any of you bought a tempurpedic mattress? Ar ethey really worth it?

I have not ever owned one, but have been told by two close friends that they have them and are just waiting until they have the money to buy a different mattress. They hate the way that they feel and said that they would never recommend them to anyone. Good luck!
I had one that I hated. You sink in and it conforms to your body, but then it holds that "mold" and needs several minutes to conform to a new position if you move. This can be an uncomfortable adjustment, and it wakes me up.
Also, after reading Wendy's comments, I recall that I had to keep the mattress in a spare room for many months before I could stand the smell, then I had to cover it with extra cushioning so that my body heat wouldn't release more smell. It didn't stay in our house for more that a couple of months of actual use.
I ended up getting an all-natural latex mattress; exquisitely comfortable, very durable (at least 20 year life span), and no fire-retardand chemicals to be concerned about. Five years in, it's still like new, and I'm still delighted with it. My husb finds it very comfortable, too, and we've both got back problems. We're about to order a second mattress for our futon/guest bed.
I got mine from Mulligan Mattress in Portland, OR, and was very satisfied with my experience with the proprietor, Gary Kramer. I'm sure he'll ship anywhere. http://www.mulliganmattress.com/about.html
I believe tempurpedic is memory foam? If it is, go to overstock.com.
We got a $2,500 memory foam mattress for $210 (including shipping). It is heavenly!
Everybody who sits on it comments on how wonderful it is, and our kids are always sneaking into our room to try to take a nap on our bed!
So memory foam - YES!
Tempurpedic - NO! You can get much cheaper @ overstock!
my friends did and the chemical smell coming off the mattress just about killed them. they had to put it outside til the smell went away. while it was de-stinking itself my friend did a little more research into it and discovered that it is made up of pure chemicals that leach out (the smell) for years. they ended up selling it. i'm not sure if their still like that, this was 10 years ago or so.
We have one from Relax the Back. Never smelled a thing, so I don't know anything about that. I love it. Never slept better.
The only thing is that if you are a warm natured person, you may need less covers, I did. But I would not trade it for anything. Love it.

I am surprised to read the negative responses about the mattress -- that has not been my experience at all. My husband and I have had our tempurpedic mattress for three years and LOVE it! Ours came with a 90 day guarantee . . . if you got a similar deal as that, you could try it out and take it back if it did not work for you.
Please do your research! I completely agree with the posters about the chemicals. It seems quite a few reviewers of tempurpedic have had severe headaches, sickness etc. My sister has a tempurpedic and said it sleeps hot and they have sagging after 3 years. they are heavier so i don't know if that contributes.
I have been looking for a latex mattress for months and have read up on natural latex vs. memory foam. We recently tried out a SavyRest mattress at a local store and I absolutely loved it....as much as you can love a mattress after trying it out for less than 20 mins :) But we haven't pulled the trigger yet b.c it is very pricey and they do not have a money back guarantee. The nice thing about the savyrest is you can customize your side and your spouse can customize his. It's split in the middle (which you cannot tell when they are side by side) They do have a comfort guarantee where you can trade layers for shipping price. We are still contemplating. I have fibromyalgia so I wake up stiff and sore every morning. When I laid on the latex mattress I felt none of the pressure points like I normally do. I found a great deal of info at www.healthyfoundations.com
Good luck!
We have had our tempurpedic for three years and love it. We do wish we spent the extra money to get one with a pillow top on it since our previous bed was a pillow top. I did sleep a lot better during my recent pregnancy on the tempurpedic than I did when I was pregnant and sleeping on the pillow top. They do take some time to break in.
When we bought ours the sales rep told us that they walk on the mattresses for a few days to break them in for the show room. We walked on our a little for the first couple of months, and our son who was around 9 months helped with this part too. I would say my side of the bed broke in the fastest since I think my husband and I both sleep on that side!!!
I do have to say I don't use as many covers as I use to falling asleep, but by the morning I'm all covered up. As for the smell at first it is strong, but our sales rep told us how to take care of that. We placed a cut up apple on a plate and placed it in the center of the bed from the time they delivered the mattress until it was time to make the bed so we could go to bed. I would say it was probably on the mattress for 10-12 hours. We have not had any problems with the smell since.
They do take a little time to get use to just because they are a whole different experience. Just a little note about the price of them. Per our sales rep all true tempurpedics are suppose to be priced at the same price at every store they are sold in. Knowing this made it easy to get free delivery, and a huge discount on the pillows which we have also had for three years. Good luck.
We've had one since 2004, and, while I like it, I don't think I will get another one. We have a classic king (no pillowtop), and I find that it feels comfortable when I'm laying on it, but I tend to wake up whenever I need to turn over, rather than just comfortably doing it in my sleep with a spring mattress. Also, there is a chemical smells that lasts (even with airing out) for up to a year, and that really struck me as 1) gross and 2) how fake/chemical they are. My next bed will be a pillow top organic spring mattress. Finally, sometimes I wake up with a back ache that I don't get with a fine spring mattress, which I attribute to the fact that you move around a lot less on a temper pedic.
I have had one for about four years and the only thing I can really complain about is it is really hot...it is really comfy and we sleep really well. My husband LOVES it!! I will say about the smell it was really strong when we first got it but honestly the smell went away fast. The thing I love most about it is when someone moves you absolutely can't feel it so you don't wake up to someone rolling over!
we went with a latex from "the Dump" (over by DFW airport) we did get the pillow top style, and we love it, it easily conforms to you with out the hassle of you sinking down in so far that you have to wake up to roll over. also it doesn't get hot like the memory foam will. We love our latex mattress!!! it was a lot less expensive than the Tempurpedic also. no smell either!
I have a tempurpedic pillow. Hate it, it gets hard if the room is a little cold (I like to sleep in a cool room). It conforms to the shape of your head and does not pop back into shape and it does not offer good neck support. (I have the one that is suppose to be for people with neck problems)
We love ours and do not have any of the issues some of the people mentioned. The odor was gone within a day and I honestly did not reallly notice it much at all. The heat is not a problem at all and I tend to get hot at night. We got ours from Relax the Back and you can get the tax written off if you get a doctor to write a prescription for it. It was definitely worth the money to us!!
My Mom has one, from Costco.
She likes it.
It is comfy.
My dad just got one a couple weeks ago... the smell is BAD.. but he loves it, he is disabled.. so he wanted something more comfortbale.. I personally didnt like it though
We have a memory foam mattress from Wal Mart. My husband mistakenly bought it when he went for a memory foam topper (why an 8" thick mattress could look like a 2" pad...I'm not sure). We bought a platform frame (don't like the frame, but we'd had the mattress on the floor for a year or more) and I really like the mattress. He did end up buying another memory foam topper to make it higher. I think it cost around (maybe a bit more maybe a bit less) $200. He dreams of having a tempurpedic someday and I figure if we can ever afford it our current mattress can go in a guest room. You might consider a less expensive option so you're not out too much if you don't like it at all, but I'm pretty content with the one we have.
I just read through the comments here, too. I don't remember any smell and I know we slept on it the night we bought it (it had not completely uncurled, but there was no noticeable smell).
