Tempurpedic Beds

I have 3 tempurpedic pillows (2 neck & one original). My husband uses one of the two neck pillows and I use the other and I use the original for in between my knees if my lower back is aching. We're contemplating getting a new bed. And I think I may have swayed him (with the gift of the pillow from me) to checking out a Tempurpedic bed. I'll explain what we have, what we've had in the past, and what we've both found to be comfortable... Maybe you can help?

We're sleeping on a King sized bed that I bought 8-9yrs ago. It's been through h3ll and back. (my ex husband and I bought it, we got divorced, I left it with him, I have no idea what he did to it, but the box springs are bent and the mattress itself has permenant dents in it... His new wife didn't want that bed and that's how my husband and I got it.) We WERE sleeping on my husbands relatively new bed prior to that but it was WAY too firm for me and now that he's slept on something other than firm, he's decided it's far too firm for him too. The mattress before that... Was my full sized that I bought when I was 16 (I'll be 32 in Jan) and is still by far the most comfy in the house, but my daughter is sleeping on that one now. So what I"m wondering is, if you've owned or slept on a Tempurpedic, what is your thoughts about it? Did you like it? Not? And why?

I'm looking for something that's a medium firmness, but has a nice fluffy pillowtop. I think I know which Tempurpedic would be a good one for us, but I'd like some input if you have some.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Absolutely love our tempurpedic. You have to have patience though. It takes a few weeks for the smell to go away. You must use the $100 cover or the warranty will void. It takes about a month for what I believe your back to get used to sleeping right. You whole body doesn't sink in. It 'hugs' you. Like, the parts that need to sink to get your back straight sink. I have no achey back or neck anymore, ever. Took a good 4 weeks though. Love it. Wouldn't ever get another kind again. ;)

I'm not sure if you have a Bob's Discount Furniture in your area? I think that may be a North East thing but I don't know for sure. Anyway, they sell a generic called the Bobopedic. That is what we have. King size was around $1300 I think.

I LOVE THIS BED! I have never slept so good in my entire life. I am not exaggerating at all. When we go away, we actually dread it because we know that the bed will not be as comfortable as our own!

I agree with everything Mommy L said

LOVE our king tempurpedic we bought in February.
I am very hot blooded, and did not find it slept hot at all during the summer, which actually surprised me. BUT with winter coming, we cannot use anything electric (blanket or mattress pad) to warm the bed.

And I do not buy into advertising but do my own research and ask people just as you are doing. In our 24 years together this is our 3rd mattress. I can't remember the first one, but then we bought a Sterns & Foster. This by far is our favorite.

We have the original tempurpedic for about 5 years now and it's by far the most comfortable bed i have ever had! I used to have lower back pain & ever since i got that bed...i have no more problems with that. It takes some time to get used to but after you do you won't want to be in any other bed! Good luck!

I love my Tempurpedic pillow but absolutely hated the mattress. We returned it within the trial period at my insistence.

To me it felt like sleeping on a sponge, and it had a weird (plastic?) smell to it.

Maybe we just got a lemon . . . I don't know. But we didn't try another one. My husband sort of liked it but he wasn't willing to listen to me gripe about it forever. ;)

I have the original tempurpedic and love it still. I bought it in 2003 or 4. When you first get it, it will seem REALLY firm (if they are the same), but I will never go back to a normal mattress after this one, and will only buy a new one if I hit the 20 years, or want to go up to a king.

Temperpedic and The Sleep Number bed are a prime example of info-mercial advertising at it's best. They know we are all tired and most people wake up at least once in the night, so they have capitalized on it by selling these totally overpriced beds. (My parents bought a sleep number bed, and it is not worth the money I can tell you that right now)
Anyway.... I have a king size pillow top but after you lie on it for a while it just gets kinda hard, feels good when you first lay down but after that..... it's just hard and uncomfortable. So, I paid for a 3" thick memory foam topper from Costco online for less than 200 bucks and I totally love it, it's like having a whole new bed. I have no pressure spots anymore and hardly even move during the night.
Since your current mattress is already broken down and sinking in --a topper wouldnt work for you tho.....
I'd find a decent mattress that is not over priced and do the addition of the topper if I were you.

We've enjoyed the Tempurpedic very much. We moved and our bedroom is smaller so we had to purchase a new mattress and my husband "thought" he didn't like the Tempurpedic....until he no longer had it. It was a King so we broke it in half and both my teenage daughters have one XL twin now. I wish we still had it but if I had it to do over I would upgrade to a pillowtop. The mattress itself responds to heat so it's much firmer in the winter than it is in the summer, and it's much firmer when you lay down than after you've been laying down for a while. Once your body heat gets to it (about 20 minutes) it softens up.

I didn't find the "knock offs" to be very good. I'm not sure I trust the manufacturing practices of most as they are made in China. We have already broken down the mattress we just bought and will be shopping for another Tempurpedic or upgrading to a Latex mattress.

My two cents!

We do not have a Tempurpedic, but we have a Spa Solutions (I think that's the brand) from Wal Mart, which is an 8" thick memory foam mattress. I think it was around $250 when we bought it about two years ago. I really like it and my husband bought it thinking it was a really thick memory foam topper (still not sure how he made that mistake, but I'm not complaining). We had also been sleeping on the floor because we gave up on our broken boxspring and concave cheap mattress, which was killing out backs. Someday we do hope to upgrade to a king size Tempurpedic and retire our current mattress to a guest room (in our dream home, in which we will HAVE more than two bedrooms).

I prefer a firm mattress, my husband just has back issues and needs something medium, and the memory foam has been pretty good. The only other consideration is getting a decent platform frame. I wish we had one that had a solid base rather than the wood slats, which tend to pop out on ours (especially if you actually do anything other than sleep on your bed). We bought a cheap captain's platform frame with drawers in the base but I think I could modify it with plywood if I'm ever really motivated.

So, if the cheap one is pretty good, then I'm sure the Tempurpedic would be a great investment. If you can afford it, go for it. There is NOTHING worse than sleeping on a cheap mattress for years.

Check out Savvy Rest! it's all natural latex. Doesn't have the chemical smell of tempurpedic, doesn't sleep hot. It is made up of 6 separate pieces of latex, so you can customize your side and your husband can customize his! We absolutely love ours. I was really worried about spending that amount on a bed, but it is money well spent. Recently, my husband wasn't feeling well and tossed and turned half of the night. He did not disturb me b.c the mattress doesn't transfer motion. We got a twin for our daughter and she sleeps so well on it.

My husband wants to get a tempurpedic but I don't. I have not slept on one before but I have slept on a bed with a memory foam topper and they sleep "hot," which I don't like. I also woke up with a back ache every morning. I don't see how sleeping on something that you sink into can be very good for your back/posture. Personally I'm more interested in a sleep number bed, but my husband calls them "overpriced air mattresses" and doesn't want to pay for one :(

We have a memory foam pillow top mattress and box springs from relax the back. I love it, my husband loves it, all my kids love it and want one, and I have never slept better. Never noticed a smell at all. The only think I have noticed is that if the air conditioning is out, I think you get a lot hotter than on a regular mattress. We have had it for 6 years now. It feels both soft, and firm at the same time.

On the other hand, our neigbors have a sleep number, never felt it, but they love it too.

Don't know if you want a whole new bed... but the "Aireloom" beds are real great. (look online to see it).
Here's the link:
http://www.aireloom.com/home.html

It has Tempurpedic technology.... and is also made with "green" materials & organic etc.
A friend of mine has one... and said that is the best bed she's ever had.... ever. She has MANY back/shoulder/hip problems... and with this bed, ALL of her aches and pains, has vanished.

all the best,
Susan

Another option is the Select Comfort/Sleep Number beds. If your husband needs more firm and you need less firm, you have that option to control your individual needs. You can still have Queen or King size but you have separate air chambers.
Look into that as well.

a chiropractor told me that pillow-top beds are bad for your back, good for his business. If you have a good chiropractor, he/she might be worth asking for their opinion.
