Teething Tablets - Austin, TX

What are your thoughts on homeopathic teething tablets (Hyland's and Little Teethers)? I have heard lots of good things about them and bought some tonight at the store. My SIL mentioned that she had heard they were recalled so I tried to find more info online. No recall info, but a few bad reports. The number of good reports significantly outnumbered the bad reports...
I thought I'd hold off on using the tablets tonight and ask the mommies of Mamasource their opinions. Anyone have any bad experiences using these tablets or know anyone first hand who had a bad experience?
Thanks!

In my opinion Hyland's are a wonder drug. I haven't heard anything about recall, but my son is out of age of using them.

I had a sinus infection and used some oragel on my upper gums for the pain. The taste was wreched. I vowed I would never give oragel to my son again.

The teething tablets are awesome! I tell every mommy with a teething little one to try them. I still give them to my 2 year old to help with the molars that are coming in it makes a huge difference.

When my daughter was a baby we used Humphreys Teething tabs, they kept them in the pharmacy behind the counter and we would have to ask for them. I loved them, they were tiny and after she swallowed them when she would drool it would numb her gums. They were wonderfull!!!!

Hi M.,
I've had great experience using Hylands cell salts for many issues in addition to teething. The ones designed for cold/runny nose work very well also. Since they are homeopathic, they do not interact with any other medicine. They are best given in a "clean mouth" which means no food or drink except water in the last 15 mins. In an older child, place the tabs under the tongue, where they are introduced fastest into the bloodstream. The tabs are tiny, dissolve quickly and have a neutral taste.
I know of no bad experience with these tabs.

Hylands also work great for adults with nervous tension headache, overeating, poor digestion, simple cold. I've used them for 30 yrs. and last gave them to my 86yr old mother for stomach upset and dehydration by aiding balance of electrolytes. HTH.
Peace, C.

Homeopathics, such as the Hylands Teething Tablets, are considered to be very safe. There are no known side effects or contraindications, though they are as effective - and more effective, in some studies - as pharmaceuticals. The only possible concern would be if someone was allergic to the inactive ingredients, which in the case of Hylands is lactose. I doubt it would be enough to set off a serious reaction, but that's the thing to look for. Otherwise, I've never heard of any problems with homeopathics, and I use them quite regularly.

Hope this helps!

They didn't really help my son at all, but then again I think he has the same resistance to pain relievers and medications of any sort that I do. Even naturopathic treatments don't work as quickly for us as they do a lot of people. I had tried them on a referral from a friend who has now used them on all 4 of her boys and they worked wonders. I think it just depends on the child.

I hope you find what works for him! Teething is definitely a hard time when you as a mom can't find anything to releive your child's pain.

The only info I found about recalls was one for the Little Teethers because they did not dissolve as easy as the label indicated. I have found that lots of times recalls or bad reports have more to do with parents administering incorrect doses or whatever. Ive used the Hylands with both of my daughters and thought they made a huge difference!! Motrin was also the pain reliever of choice for us and you can use after 6 months old. Dosage has to be given by your doctor according to her weight. My doctor tells us to give .6ml of the ibuprofen INFANT drops per 6 lbs of weight so if she weighs 18 lbs she can have 1.8 ml of the infant drops, NOT the childrens liquid. Again, I recommend these to all my friends and have NEVER had a problem with them. Just give them as directed. They do dissolve easier than the little teethers but when I give them I usually hold them in her cheek with my finger until I feel it getting soft just so she cant spit it right back out. When she was having bad teething days I would give her a dose of Motrin, teething tablets, and orajel at bedtime and she would usually get through most of the night without a problem. Good luck!!

I love Hyland's teething tablets. They work wonders and never have done anything but help. They work quickly too. I don't think you have anything to worry about since they are natural.

I talked to a doctor when my daughter was the same age as your little one about this very subject. Basically, he recommended not to use them. The problem is that because they are "homeopathic" and "natural", many people think that they are less dangerous or "better" than other medicines (and they sometimes give them to their children more freely). This is simply not the case. They are medicines just the same as Tylenol or ibuprofen. In fact, they contain substances like belladonna, a known poison (although in a very small amount). Still, it is not like you are giving your child a better option, just a different medicine that sometimes is not as regulated as the non-homeopathic ones. The doctor I consulted said just to give Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed. This always seemed to be fine for my daughter. God bless you!

Hi M.,

I've been a professional nanny and early education specialist for 20 years and have used every remedy for teething known.....the tablets work miracles for some babies and have no impact on others....just like real people, some respond to it better than others. I have heard no recall info but wouldn't expect to find the product on the shelf if its been recalled. Contact me offlst if you want to ask any questions but I would definitely try them if you have a baby in need of teething relief.
Good Luck

Motrin and Tylenol worked better than the tablets for my kids, but the Little Teethers gel was much preferred by them over Baby Orajel. Every kid is different, so just experiment and see what works best for yours.

I am not very into all natural kinds of things, but I swear by these teething tablets. I have 2 pre-schoolers now and we would not have made it through those teething days without those tablets. We took 2 every morning and every night and in between if needed.

I first used the Hylands when my son was teething and that was 8yrs ago...I used them and it was the only thing that worked for him I had tried orajel and everything else and nothing gave him relief then I came across Hyland's teething tablets and it saved my son alot of pain and sleepless nights. Then when my daughter was born I made sure to have them on hand and used them with her too..she is now about to be 3. I love them and have recommended them to everyone I know and have heard the same feedback.....Teething tablets are the best. I haven't heard of anyone having any problems with them. I am the kind of person that does not like to medicate just to get relief so when I saw that Hylands was homeopathic I was willing to try it and again fell in love with it.

I don't know about them being recalled. I tried them, didn't find them to help. but I had tried them because a friend used them on her baby and she said they were a miracle. Give it a shot, I doubt it can hurt.. I have found for my child Motrin to be the only pain reliever to work.. I can't remember at what age at they can start taking Motrin and Tylenol.. I do remember when my son was teething I would use both Tylenol and the baby teethers gel, and that seemed to help things..

Good luck.. J.

When my daughter was an infant (she's now 7) I used the Hyland teething tablets and they seemed to work great. I use to call them her happy pills. I took her to the doctor for another issue (I think it was sleeping but I can't remember for sure) and she asked exactly what I was giving her. I later called in the ingredient list of the teething tablets and she said, do not give those to your child. I have since heard of other pediatricians saying the same thing. So check into the ingredient list and talk with your doctor first.

I have tried both brands with my 8 month old son. I prefer Hylands in that they dissolve easier. And they have saved me a many sleepless nights and my poor little man some painful ones! I am pretty particular in the foods and items I use with him (first time mommy and all). I quizzed all of my friends, asked my doctor, and researched as much as I could on the internet before I was prepared to use them. I am comfortable in telling others to use them now!!!

M.,

I have mixed opinions on the teething tablets. I tried the Little Teethers with my daughter when she was teething and I hated them. They would not dissolve easily like the package said and so she would just end up spitting them out or gagging on them as they went down her throat. I even tried dissolving them in some water like they suggested and that was just a big mess and once again it took FOREVER for them to dissolve. I gave up on them and I think they're still just sitting in my medicine cabinet!

My 7 month old is now teething and I was desperate for some relief so my SIL recommended the Hyland's Teething Tablets. I just found them yesterday at the store. We tried them and I didn't really see any difference in my son. He still acted uncomfortable. I will say that the Hyland's tablets dissolved much more easily than the Little Teethers. I see more results from the Orajel that I've been using and a standard frozen teething ring. Maybe I need to continue to try them and maybe I'll see a change but overall I've not been really impressed with any of the teething tablets.

Good Luck!

i swore by these when my daughter was teething and occasionally still give them to her because of the chamomile in them. They are great as long as you don't give her too many at one time. The max is 3 or 4 per hour, as needed.
