Can teething cause diarrhea? My son is working on getting 4 teeth, and I think they are molors based on where they seem to be coming in at. He hasnt been real cranky, but he has his moments. But last weekend he was acting like he didnt feel good at all. and he threw up twice, and I had thought that he was coming down with the stomach bug that seems to be going around. He was also having the runs. He hasnt vomited since but over the past week he still has watery stools. I've been giving him pedialite to keep him hydrated, but I cant figure out why he's still having the runs? He doesnt act sick? his appitite is good, runs and plays like normal. So I thought maybe it could be caused by his teething? Has anyone else gone threw this? Should I be worried?
A., I am actually going through the same thing with my 21 month old son. He is getting his two year molars and has the same symptoms. It is perfectly normal. Don't worry, just keep him comfortable. Good luck.

I was always told that teething did not cause the runs or vomitting but all 4 of my kids ran fevers/got the runs/or threw up and then cut the tooth threw the next day. I think it most certainly can happen. That said, it is hard to convince those that think it doesn't happen so they won't want you around them or their kids until it goes away!!
Yes it can. I don't know why, but any time my son starts getting cranky during the night and starts drowling a lot, it usually follows with diarrhea. Thankfully it hasn't been too bad.
Hi A. - sounds like your son has a bug. If it persists, contact your doctor. Load him up with healthy starches like in the BRAT diet, limit sugar intake and give him plenty of fluids. Limit juices and fruit right now unless it is sauced - like applesauce. Also be sure to feed him yogurt everyday for a while to rebuild his natural gut flora.
It's a wives tale that teething directly causes diahrrea. Teething does increase saliva production and can disrupt normal eating/drinking patterns which can upset little tummies but that's about it.
I really like Highlands Teething Tabs. For really bad teething times, can dose 20min until relieved and then back to bottle instructions.

Teething should never cause vomitting. The diareha can occur just due to lot's of excess slobber in their system and I think that happnes and it is normal.
When my kids were teething they had looser stools, were cranky and tired (due to not sleeping well at night). If he is eating well don't depend on Pedialyte, make sure he is getting milk too. If he is going a lot more that is when you need to be concerned about losing hydration. If it is just they are looser it could be teething.
Milk won't cause more problems with loose stools no matter what you may hear unless it is a stomach bug, that is the only time to take dairy out of the equation. Stomach bugs can take a while to get out of the system entirely. Go get him some Activia, probiotic yogurt to help his system get back on track. That is a life saver and works wonders.
He still needs calcium, the fat in milk and Vitamin D however if it is NOT a stomach bug.
Try teething tablets or motrin to help get him past any discomfort.
Yogurt especially probiotics will help his digestive system get back in sync.
Absolutely not. There are no bigger remaining old wives' tales than the other symptoms blamed on teething. No offense to all you moms out there that swear that the drooling, the fevers, the runs & whatever else can be blamed on teething - but it simply isn't true. The only thing that teething causes is teeth. All of those other things are caused by normal development and viruses. Your child most likely has a virus. The runs can last for 10-14 days with a crazy virus. If it's lasting longer than that, or if there are any signs of dehydration, talk to your doctor. And for all of you moms who refuse to believe me, read the studies & talk to your doctors. Everyone I know swears by their teething theories, too. It doesn't make it true - look at the science.
Diarrhea caused by certain gastrointestinal bugs can last a while. You may want to take him in to the doctor to make sure everything is ok, his electrolytes might be out of whack. Sometimes they recommend some acidophilus supplements to help restore the gut bacteria. I'm a pediatric nurse and I've never heard that teething causes diarrhea, runny noses, etc. It will cause drooling and irritability however. Good luck to you!
yep, teething can cause the runs... my daughter doesn't ususally get it if she's just cutting one tooth, but she usually gets hers in clumps of 2-4 teeth at a time... I think we might almost be done (thankfully)
in the mean time, you are on the right track with keepign him hydrated.... cut out the apple juice and give him more bananas & cereals... but don't over-do it... or you'll have the opposite problem.

Both of my kids when teething have had diahrea, to the point of causing blisters. The also both ran fevers. My daughter (almost 3) ran fevers as high as 104 each time she broke in a tooth. And any doctor that says teething does not cause either of those - is full of CRUD!! My own doctor said her kids did it too. It ijust all depends on the individual kid.
At first glance I would say it is from the teething, but since my epxperience these last 2 weeks it may not be. My 22 month old is cutting teeth is it is normal for him to het the runs, but then my daughter got sick with that bug. My son was running around and playing fine, then threw up for 2 days and now he just has diarrhea...still playing may I mind you. The doc said he had the stomach flu. Treatment is minimal, but it does spread to other family members so I would get the lysol out! Better safe than sorry!! Good Luck
Yes it can. That happens to my son every time he gets a new tooth. It will go away soon don't worry.If he threw up he may have a little bug. Hope this helps!
That is very normal. Teething is different all the time even if it is the same kid and the same mouth.

The diarrhea portion of this bad stomach flu seems to be hanging around for about 3-4 weeks in infants. I do infant daycare and some of us have had the bug and others have not, but those of us that did (adult or child) had diarrhea way longer than the vomiting. I will say in the adults though it only seemed to last about 1 week. The infants a lot longer.
My kids both had the runs when they were teething. I would keep an eye on it. Did you notice anything different he may be eating? Or drinking? I would call the ask a nurse line, if you have one and find out what they say. Good luck!!!
