Hi! My son will be 14 weeks old tomorrow and up until this point, he has been a very relaxed and predictable baby. He really only cries when he is hungry or over-tired. My hubby and I have had him on a pretty regular routine (w/ cues from baby) and our days go by very easily. Two days ago, he stopped eating as much as he normally has (6-7oz every 4-5 hours) and is now only wanting 4 oz (5 at the most) and he fusses almost the entire time he's eating. He is also not napping very well and of course fussing a lot more then we are used to. I know that we have been spoiled somewhat w/ how "good" our son has been and I don't want to seem worried over two days worth of fussiness, BUT I was wondering if it's possible for him to be teething already??? I have read online that it's "possible, but not likely"... can anyone give me some real Mommy opinions/advice?? He has been drooling the last few weeks, but I thought that it was "normal" for babies to drool. He's just getting the hand/eye coordination down so he's not really trying to put stuff into his mouth other then his hands, so he's not really trying to chew on stuff, but then again, I don't think he knows how to chew on stuff yet.
Am I over thinking this b/c of my usually relaxed baby or is it possible for him to be teething already?? AND if it does turn out that he's teething... I would love some advice as to what I can do for him since cold foods, teething rings, etc. won't really be an effective option for us since he's not even close to solid foods, etc. yet.
Thank you in advance for your help!!

T.,

It is very possible that he is teething. He may or may not cut teeth now. My now 5 year old son cut his first two teeth at 4 months old. Prior to that he was fussy, drooled everywhere (through 2+ outfits daily), and just wanted Mommy.

it all depends on the child when they start getting teeth. my daughters were alittle later then my son and i think only had 8 teeth by the time they were one and he has 12. our best friends have a daughter born the same day as our son and she has 4 teeth. i have always used the numing stuff to make sure it is there teeth before i would give them tylenol or anything good luck it can be a long or short process for each tooth so hang in there.

it is more likely to be a growth spurt than teething at this age...babies change a lot in a short period of time - don't count on anything being his "normal" way for quite some time!

Hi T.,

It is definitely possible he is teething. Some babies are even born with teeth, so it's never too early to pop that first tooth out. The best mannered babies will become fussy, clingy, and will either sleep a lot or have a difficult time sleeping when teething starts up. I had a rough time with my otherwise incredibly pleasant daughter when she started teething and we tried everything from Hyland's Teethign tablets and gel to Ibuprofen, Tylenol and Orajel. There were times it seemed like nothing would help until I went to an aromatherapist and we designed a specially formulated teething oil that was strong, effective, delicious and safe to use. It works so great that I started bottling it and selling it. I would be happy to send you some samples to see if they help.

Just send me an email with your address and I'll put some in the mail to you. Or if you are near Tualatin, give me a call and you are welcome to come over and check it out. We also have amber teething necklaces which are great at providing natural pain relief.

Its definatly possible for him to be teething. My son got his firt 2 teeth at 4 months. (they came in sets of two's) Is he drooling more than normal? It can sometimes take a couple of months for the teeth to actually break through, and thats when they usually get the fussiest. Cold foods may not be an option, but teething rings are not out of the question. I'm sure he will figure out quickly how to chew on them. They are very soothing and he can't chew through them. With my son, i liked to let him chew on the corner of a cold rag. I would wet down just one corner and stick it in the freezer for just a minute and he would just chew away and it always made him feel better. tylenol is another option if he gets feverish or seems too uncomfortable or can't sleep. When my son's teeth got to the point where they were about to break through (about one layer of tissue left) I would massage that part of his gums with a just a little pressure, it seemed to give him a lot of relief and I think it may help the tooth come through a little quicker. My daughter never had the issues, I barely knew she was ever teething until she had a new tooth. If his drooling gets to bad, make sure to put thick lotion/cream right under his bottom lip and on his chin. The one problem my daughter had with a couple of her teeth is that she drooled so much the skin there got raw and was very uncomfortable for her. Good luck.

Hi,
you are right it is probably a sign of teething, but don't expect those teeth to pop out just yet. It still can and probably will be months before anything happens. His teeth are probably just starting to shoot into his gums, that hurts! Wish you luck.

Sounds like classic teething symptoms, but keep in mind that you might not see any teeth for a number of weeks yet. I HIGHLY recommend getting Hyland's Teething Tablets. They are safe (not medicine) and get baby back to normal in about 15 minutes, lasting up to 2 hours!

Hi there. Yes, it's definitely possible that he is teething. My first son started teething at about 2-2.5 months old and had his first two teeth before he turned 19 weeks old. He never fussed too much with his teeth, so we didn't have to do much. With our second, we've been making sure to use tylenol when he seems like he's hurting and I've never used them with my kids (just because I never get to the health food store) but I have many family and friends who say the Hylands brand (sp?) of teething tablets are wonderful. You just put it in his cheek and it dissolves quickly and apparently works really well. Good luck. I hope you get your "easy" baby back. =)

It's certainly possible that he's teething. My son had 4 teeth by 4 months old. I have also heard that the natural teething tablets work well. Good luck.

Hi there my son done the same, you may want to try and change the nipple so he has the kind that you need to sit him up more as the other may not be giving him as much as he wants unless he sucks harder which will make them fussy if they are hungry but to tired to suck, it also hurts their ears to work at sucking more. Being that age to now he may be ready for some cereal to help satify his hunger some. be patience love him and soon you will laugh at yourself as they grow up so fast. If you plan on any other children, heres a piece of advice,....write down your experiences and how you solved them even though all children are not the same they are so much alike in problems so keep a baby book to go back over and enjoy each other. It almost sounds like it may be an ear infection. I would take him to the Dr. to have it checked out. My daughter showed similar signs about 1 month ago and that's what she had.

My son is turning two on Feb 5th and I still remember those not-so-sure-what-to-do moments. He may be gettin' a bug. My son was as well a easy baby. Are you breastfeeding? If you are it may be something your eating that may not agree with him. Are you doing okay? You'd be amazed by what your baby can sense from you..ect... Stress, worry, saddness. It could also very well be gas. That was a lot of why my son fussed. Try the bicycle. Lay him on his back and move his legs like a bike, this is great for gas. Good luck and I hope this helps. Sacred all these moments because they go by way too fast.

My first thought is ear infection.
I have children that know when the weather changes and they react to it. When it would get windy an rainy outside my kids would get cranky. Something about the barometer drop. I don't know if there is anything medical about this.
Good luck

There could be a multitude of reasons why he's not eating as much these past couple of days and crying more. Could he have an ear ache? Could you have ate something that didn't agree with him? (spicy or gasy foods can influence your breast milk) Teething is a possibility, but he is fairly young. As babies become more aware their imaginations are growing, and separating reality from imagination is not possible for them. Separation anxeity. If it persists for a day or two more, number of wet diapers decreases, call for an appt with your pediatrician and have him checked out. As for teething rings, they are appropriate just like a frozen washcloth is... dampen a wash cloth at one corner, freeze it and then give that to him to chew on. See if that brings him any relief. Best and warmest wishes for all of you this new year!
