Teething or Something More Serious?

My almost 9 month old is sleeping almost all day.. he will be awake for maybe an hour at most.. and then get really fussy and clingy, so i put him back down and he will sleep for hours.. wake up and repeat the whole thing over. He also has a runny nose, is feeling warm and has a small case of diarrhea. I have read that sleeping more than usual is a sign of a growth spurt? but the other symptoms are signs of teething. Anyone else have this problem? He is also not wanting to eat baby food as much, but has been drinking more formula than usual. He doesn't actually have a temp, but his skin just feels a lot warmer than usual. I'm thinking its just a combo of a growth spurt and teething, but i'm a worrywart! haha.

What can I do next?

Just woke up from nap and ate a nice big lunch and is chasing the cat around the living room! He is such a ham. haha. Thanks again ladies. It really means a lot.

Has he been recently vaccinated?
I would call the doctor to see what he says. This isn't normal. Is he sleeping at night as well? You are not a worrywart! You are being a good mother.

it's prob a combo of growth spurt, teething, and possibly a mild virus on top of it all. i'm not one to run my kids to the dr for every little thing, but if it's been going on long enough for it to be a noticable pattern, i'd run him in to the pedi this morning to rule out anything serious. hope it's "nothing".

At 9 months, he should not be sleeping that long for any reason, teething or growth spurt. You need to take him into the doctor asap. My little girl did that once (she happened to be 9 months at the time, too). I took her into the doctor and it turned out she had strep throat. Your baby may not have that but something is wrong if he is sleeping that much. I hope he gets better soon!

I would take him to his dr. he is sleeping like a newborn & that is too much for a 9 mo. old. Remember to write down how he has been acting, eating & he symptoms. I tend to forget all this when I walk through the dr.'s office door & kick myself for not writing it down.
I hope he gets to feeling better!

God bless!

Sounds more like a viral infection to me. How long has this been going on? It is not well known whether teething actually causes fever and diarrhea. Here is an excerpt from BabyCenter:

http://www.babycenter.com/0_teething_11243.bc

"Experts disagree about whether teething actually causes symptoms — like fussiness, diarrhea, and fever — or whether these common symptoms are not related to teething at all and just coincidentally appear at the same time as emerging teeth."

I personally think probably the latter is true, and I would make sure something important is not missed thinking the symptoms are due to teething.

If he is teething, he would drool a lot and want to put everything in his mouth. It also usually causes discomfort that would wake him up, rather than sleeping this much.

He may be drinking more formula than usual as he is not able to eat much baby food. It is a very good thing in this situation, as he will not get dehydrated due to diarrhea.

I would definitely call his doctor and see what they say. They may want you to bring him in. That much sleep is not usual.

I have a one year old and he has always been a great sleeper. He loves to take long naps twice a day, every day. When he has the other symptoms that you described, he also manages to sleep longer than usual. Just about the amount you described. I don't think there is anything wrong with him at all! I talked to my doctor and she said that as long as it doesn't last for more than a couple days, he is fine.

My little guys normal nap lengths are 2 hrs, twice a day and when he goes through these times, it can be 3-4 hours in the morning and then 2-3 hours in the afternoon.

That sounds like too much sleep for his age. I would take him to the doctor to see if he has some sort of viral infection.

Sleeping most of the day would worry me, a lot. Have you considered taking him the the doc?
