Teething Gel or Not

And another... seems like I am on a roll today with the questions...
Baby is 8 months and looks like his first teeth are on the way... My pediatrician is against using oragel and would rather me give advil or tylenol. I am wondering what everyone here does. I had some Hylands but my batch was in the recall and since then I am not sure about them. I guess my stance is that I would rather just use something topical to help with the pain than to give him an oral medicine which goes in to the whole body. (does that make sense) I only give medicine as a last resort. He seems happy but when he goes to latch he is clearly uncomfortable.
Thanks

What can I do next?

I haven't had any real luck with the teething tablets or Orajel because they don't seem to last very long, as discussed in the other posts. When my babies were REALLY cranky and needed some relief, I went with Motrin because it lasts longer than Acetaminophen and because I was more concerned with the side effects of Tylenol than with the Ibuprofen/Motrin. That being said, I only use it when they're really desperate as I don't want to overmedicate my kids. But it works extremely well.

Why is your Doc opposed to using oragel? My daughter is 19 months and I have been using it since she started teething at a year. I don't use it every day but when I see she is in a lot of pain. I also use ibuprofin but again not every day and when I do use I use it at night to help her sleep better.

You could try teething tablets. They are made to dissolve easily.

I gave them to my son the entire time he was teething and it worked great.

Good luck!

As well as the other posters, I used the Hyland's teething tablets. I was doubtful that they would have any effect but boy was I surprised! Really made a difference!

used the baby orajel on my son but it never really did any good. Hed stop crying for like a minute and then it would come back. His pediatrician said that the orajel fades so easily because it gets washed away with his saliva. She recommended Motrin, but I stuck with Tylenol because its more gentle. I also only gave it to him if he was like in extreme teething paon. Otherwise, I just gave him lots of stuff to bite on. (teething biscuits, teething ring, toys made for teething babies, ect0

I alternate between Ibuprofen and Tylenol...but mainly the tablets. The problem with Oragel is that it isn't effective unless you apply it RIGHT where the pain is... which can be tricky to figure out. Also, if it gets in the back of the throat it will numb that and can cause the baby to choke on drool (or anything he is eating.) My DD is a miserable teether, but usually does good with just tablets (which are homeopathic... the recall is only because they use belladonna in it, and too much is obviously bad. The tablets aren't regulated the same as some medications, so some pills might have a slightly higher percentage than others... but not so much that it's unsafe. your baby will only OD on it if they eat about 2-3 bottles all at once, so it's safe. I did a lot of research on the recall because I depend on Hylands soo much during teething!) I use the actual pain meds. when she gets really bad though. :)
