Teething and Not Sleeping

Hi, My name is S. and my son is 51/2 months old. This weekend he started to cut his 2 bottom teeth. He has moments when he is fine and happy but when he is in pain nothing seems to console him but holding him. This wouldn't be so bad except that he went from taking 2 2-3 hour naps and sleeping through the night to not taking more than 2 40 minute naps and waking up crying in pain almost every 2-3 hours during the night. I tried teething rings and he won't take them. He won't take the wet/cold washcloth, and tylenol and orajel aren't really helping the pain. Any suggestions to help him sleep longer.
Thanks S.

What can I do next?

I keep one of my daughter's pacifiers in the freezer. When she gets really fussy with her teeth I pull it out, the cold 'shocks' her into stopping crying and then soothes her. works every time. You'll probably get mixed views on baby oral-gel but I've used it a couple of times and it works for a little bit although it can be messy. Try a little before putting your son down for a nap. And don't fret, he'll get back to a better sleeping pattern soon enough. My daughter was doing the same thing and now she's back to her 2 hour and 1 hour naps.

S.,
Research teething on this site--there is some kind of natural tablet that moms swear by--I can't remember the name (Is it Hylands Teething Tablets?) but have read about them--too bad my son is now 5 and I didn't know about them! Good luck.

TEETHING TABLETS! The Hyland's Teething Tablets are a life saver! I agree with the other Mom! My son is 2 1/2 and they work wonders! All natural and work instantly! They have them at Rite-Aid and CVS...Best of Luck!

Highlands does work miracles, but not if your baby is lactose intolerant. I found out the hard way! My pediatrician recommended that I not use oragel because it would numb the area, which can upset the baby since it is a new feeling he is not familiar to having/understand. Tylenol for the immediate relief (fast acting) is what my pediatrician told me to do and alternate it with Motrin (long lasting).

Hey S.

I would call the peds and ask if you can give him some Motrin. He's only 2 weeks away from the recomended age and Motrin is much better at relieving their pain. Orajel also has a stronger, overnight formula you could try.

well as a mother, and a childcare provider...it melts our hearts when we can not seem to console them. Holding her is quite fine, but the sleeping and being uncomfortable is not, to you and for him. Orjel is nasty! The only reccomendations that I have are frozen washclothes, Whiskey(LOL)and if your ped says ok, I would give them tylenol
