Hi Ladies,
My 15 month old son is teething, I think, and has absolutley been refusing to eat. Over the past three days he has eaten only a fraction of what he normally does (and more along the line of snack foods like wagon wheels, graham crackers, and rice cakes). Is this a result of teeth coming in or is this just him being picky? He used to love oatmeal and peanut butter but now, he just throws whatever I give him onto the floor (my response is to then look him in the eye and firmly say 'no'). I have tried feeding so many different types of food, feeding him without the bib, and even feeding him on the ground when he's playing cars. His nurse said that as long as he's drinking (which he is...he drinks at least 12 ounces of water a day, 6 ounces of whole milk, and nurses 3-4 times a day) there's probably nothing to worry about. Is there anything I should be looking for? Does this sound like teething pain or fussiness?

My son is also 15 months and we're going through the exact same thing. I could have written your post except for the nursing part. I think for you, since you are still nursing and he's drinking well you are probably just fine. He's probably getting a lot of what he needs through your milk still and that's great. I personally try to avoid medicating my son, but if it gets pretty bad and I can tell he's in a good amount of discomfort then he gets a dose of motrin. Motrin handles swelling and pain a bit better than Tylenol from what I have been told. Teething tablets worked well for us in the past, but don't seem to help now that he's older. He's got a total of 5 teeth coming in right now. I can see both top eye teeth, two bottom teeth and one molar. The molar is part way through and the rest are just below the surface.
With my son, we just try to do whatever we can. He'll go for fruits and soft veggies pretty easily so we do a lot of those. He'll do graham crackers, cheeses (I cut it in sticks and he knaws on them), frozen juice cubes (freeze 'em in an ice cube tray and put them in a mesh feeder) and yogurt. He also still does meats pretty well as long as they're cooked soft so we can get chicken or turkey down sometimes. Its touch and go though. Sometimes something will work, sometimes it won't. We just keep offering it!
try hylands teething tablets they are found at cvs walmart walgreens they help a lot, and maybe he is hot and doesnt want food, just offer him food and keep doing that all throughout the day,
We have been going through the same thing to a lesser degree around here. I haven't tried the tablets although a friend did recommend them to me. I have been more successful with things like yougurt, watermelon and anything cold. Also since he is eating less, I have upped the milk for a bit and he does a little less water. It is challenging! I agree with the nurse, he's getting enough, especially if he's still nursing 3-4 times a day. Like some of the other mom's have said, try the teething tabs! Those with a little bit of Motrin seen to work wonders!
May be a bit of both teething and fussiness. I agree with the other posts. The nurse is correct, if he is hydrated, then good to go. He'll eat when he's hungry. Just keep offering the food. I know that him throwing it on the floor is aggravating, but he's 15 months! That's what happens then.

My is now 23 months old and he has done this since he was @ 16-18 months old too. I worried about it for a long time too especially the first time it happened. I can tell you that once my son cut the teeth he was "working on" he did return to his normal eating habits. Now I just know that when he starts to eat a lot less and gets really picky that he is probably teething. Good luck! Hopefully your son's picky-ness will pass as well.
