My son is 6 1/2 months and had been teething for about 5 months. Ive been giving him the 'teething biscuits', he doesn't have any teeth yet. However he is biting them and eating them. The past couple of months he has had 2 ear infections because of the teething. Humpreys and tylenol not working, I dont know what else to give him?? Of anyone has any suggestions, I just need to know what I can give him that he wont choke on or that will give him comfort.

What can I do next?

My son always got ear infections when teething so it CAN happen. When he got all his teeth in he finally stopped getting ear infections. Ibuprofen or Advil helped him with the pain. Wet washcloth to chew on can help his gums. The electric toothbrush sounds like an awesome idea!!

These worked great for my son when he was that age. I would put frozen peaches in them, or other frozen fruits. I eventually put strawberries and raspberries in there too, but I'm not sure what age they can have those fruits. Also, I have found that Ibuprofen works better for my son when he is teething. It lasts longer too (8 hours)!

Can't remember how old my kids were when they were teething but they had to be around the same age... Anyway one of the things I stumbled on accidently was an electric toothbrush. We got one of the kids size electric toothbrushes from a friend. My son was teething and he had the toothbrush in his mouth (like everything else). I sat down and let him play with it for a little while, once he got used to it, I turned it on. He would lie on the floor with that toothbrush in his mouth for the longest time. It must have felt like a little massage on the sore gums... anyway he liked it and it stopped the crying and fussiness for awhile. Can't hurt to let them start brushing early! Not sure if you meant Hylands when you said Humpreys... but Hylands makes teething tablets and teething gel... if one doesn't work try the other. We used the tablets on our 1st, but they didn't work for our 2nd only the gel worked for him. Anything cold works great too, we had a lot of the little chewy toys that you get at the toy stores that you put in the freezer to make cold or a wet the corner of washcloth and put it in the freezer. Also last resort check with your dr. but Motrin and Tylenol are also great!

Hyland's make an all natural teething tablet that dissolves instantly and also a gel. You should be able to find them at Walgreen's or CVS. I actually don't think that teething biscuits are recommended for 6 mth olds, if they can, they have a tendency to bite off more and cause a choking hazard. You can also try wetting a corner of a washcloth, stick it in the freezer and let him use it to chew on. Also frozen bananas or whole carrots - not the baby cut.

If you are still breastfeeding, you can express some milk and drop a couple of drops in his ear on a daily basis. It's an anti-bacterial/ anti-fungal. You can also use it for pink eye, on cuts and abrasions (better than neosporin!) and cover with a bandage. Has the ped said the teething is causing the ear infection? Granted, I'm not a doc, but I've never heard of that before! Good luck!

Motrin worked better for my kids than Tylenol, so that may be worth a try. Also, the frozen wet washcloth was wonderful. I never tried the electric toothbrush, but I absolutely would if I had it to do over again. Sounds like a great idea! Frozen bagels can be helpful, and I have friends that used to give frozen bananas.

Our pediatrician recommended this, and my daughter loves it: take a bunch of nipples (bottle nipples), tape the holes (duct tape is good), fill each with water and freeze them (we use a cookie rack to hold them in the freezer, so they stay upside down). When they're frozen, just insert a frozen nipple into a bottle and hand to baby. He's old enough to hold his bottle and can maneuver the frozen nipple in his mouth to where it hurts most. It has a numbing effect, plus the nipple itself will feel good.

Liquid calcium/magnesium....it's a natural painkiller and nervous system relaxant. Bluebonnett or Lifetime (blueberry flavor). Also, for ear infections, try to limit the dairy and maybe the wheat in the biscuits are causing a sensitivity? Also, Hyland's Teething Tablets worked for 2 of my kids, but I had to find the right combo. Hyland's Calms Forte 4 Kids worked even better.

There are other homeopathics that work really well. I use Pulsatilla for infections in my children....like 30 of them a day, if bad. I use Boiron and can always find them locally.

Aconitum apellus: If teething is very painful, and the baby seems agitated or fearful, this remedy can often bring relief. The baby’s face may be flushed, the gums may look inflamed, and sleep can be very restless.

Belladonna: Intense inflammation and gum pain, with flushing of the face and a feeling of heat, often indicate a need for this remedy. The baby is restless, easily startled, and may tend to cry out during sleep.

Calcarea carbonica: If teething is late to begin, then slow and difficult, this remedy can be helpful. The baby may seem sad or anxious with the pain, making chewing motions and pressing his gums together, often even while sleeping. Babies who need this remedy are usually chubby, slow to learn to crawl or walk, and their heads often sweat during naps or sleep at night.

Calcarea phosphorica: This remedy may be helpful to a child whose teeth are late to come in, with aching in the gums and trouble sleeping. Irritability, picky eating habits, and stomachaches are other indications. A child who needs this remedy often is allergic to many foods and may tend toward early tooth decay.

Chamomilla: This remedy is often indicated when a child seems extremely irritable or angry and the pain appears to be unbearable. Babies may feel agitated, scream and hit, and want to be rocked or carried constantly to distract them from the pain. The gums may be so tender that touching them is intolerable — or they may feel better from hard pressure and biting down on something cold. Greenish diarrhea that occurs because of teething stress is another indication for Chamomilla.

Coffea cruda: This remedy can be helpful when a child seems excitable and has trouble sleeping because of teething pain. Distressing pain in the gums often is relieved by holding something cold on them.

Ignatia: If a child seems very emotional, upset, or sad because of teething, this remedy may bring relief. The baby’s sleep may be light and restless, with jerking or twitching in the arms and legs.

Kreosotum: This remedy may be helpful if the child has irritating saliva and severe discomfort during teething. Teeth that decay soon after coming in often indicate a need for Kreosotum.

Magnesia phosphorica: This remedy is often helpful for painful teething, relieved by pressing on the painful area and by heat. The baby may seem happier when drinking something warm from a cup or bottle, or when biting down on an object. A warm washcloth or hot water bottle held against the cheek may also help relieve the pain.

Phytolacca: This remedy may be indicated if a baby with teething pain constantly presses his or her gums together very hard, or tries to bite down on anything in reach.

Pulsatilla: A baby who is very tearful during teething and wants to be constantly held and comforted may respond to this remedy. Biting on something cold may help and warmth increases discomfort. Cool food and drinks or being out in open air also bring improvement.

Silicea (also called Silica): Slow, difficult teething that makes the baby tired and nervous may be helped by this remedy. Children who need Silica often have fine hair and seem a little delicate, with low resistance to colds or other illnesses.

Sulphur: This remedy may be indicated if a reddish irritation or rash develops on the baby’s chin or diaper area during teething episodes. Diarrhea (often whitish) may occur because of stress. The baby is irritable and anxious, feeling worse from being warm.

I have to second some of what has been said here. Hylans teething tablets work wonderfully and let them get rest when teething. Also, frozen fruit (apples, pears, etc) in the mesh teethers help soothe and are a great source of their daily fruit intake! We use baby orajel sparinling and only when it gets really bad and he is in pain. There is a night time baby orajel now. Good luck. We've been at it for month now.

Tylenol, teething tablets, but frankly teething is going to hurt. What goes a long way is extra nursing, TLC, loves and cuddles. It's just something they all go through. (mine cut his first tooth this week!) Good luck!

Cold teethers that have been in the fridge-not the freezer!- help. Breastfeeding helps. You can do ice (or frozen breastmilk) in the little mesh feeding bags. The bits that get through the mesh are very tiny so not a choking hazard.

Really, anything smooth and firm is a decent option. My 7 month old teethes on my knuckles more than anything else. Just make sure you have clean hands first and after so germs aren't spread.

Are you sure he is getting ear infections because of teething? It sounds like he might have an allergy or something... teething for 5 months with no teeth does not sound like teething to me. I have had good luck with my (older) kids with naturopathic medicine. You might want to try and find someone in your area. Recently my 5 y.o. daughter kept getting sick with the same cold over and over for 4 months straight. I took her to her pediatrician and he said, no allergies, no infections, well, y'know, kids get sick! I took her to a naturopath and he determined that she had an imbalance of bacteria in her gut, so that was affecting her immune system. He gave me some nasty supplements to mix with her food for 2 weeks. It has been 6 weeks since she stopped and she is fine now. So much for western medicine!
