My daughter started doing that when she was about that age, but didn't sprout her first tooth until she was almost 8 months old. Everyone told us she was teething -- I guess now they can say they were right! : )
My son is 17 weeks old and the past two days it appears that he's sucky on his bottom lip and making more noise. I think he may be teething already but my husband thinks he's too young. Any thoughts?

I have 4 kids ages 7 and down to 6 months and all of them started teething at 3-4 months (12- 16weeks). My husband was actually born with tooth! So its never too early- all babies are different- some don't get teeth till they are 1! It's definetly a possibility!
It is very possible that he is teething. I asked my doctor about this issue with my first son. The doctor said that some babies are actually born with teeth. Every baby teeths at different times because every baby is different. But keeping this in mind, the teeth may not actually pop through the gums yet. My second son is going through this right now. His gums will be sore as his teeth move up & down.
I've heard of some babies being born with teeth. How's that for early? My brother had four teeth by 4 months. My baby, however, is 15 1/2 months and only has her two bottom ones. All babies are different.
He could be teething. My youngest got her first tooth at four months old. But he may also have just discovered that he can make a noise by doing that.
Both of my boys got their first teeth right about 4 months, so it's definitely possible. :)
He could be getting ready for some teeth. My 2 older daughters cut their 1st teeth around 4 1/2 months and my almost 6 month old cut her 1st tooth at 22 weeks. Some babies cut teeth early and some don't. Just keep lots of toys that he can chew on. Good luck.
He could very well be cutting his teeth. I had twins and they BOTH cut their first two bottom teeth at 3 months old! Yikes thank goodness I had stopped breastfeeding by then (Not by choice but I just dried up like a well....of course if I had known I would have taken Brewery tablets from the herb shop---if I had only known but I breastfeed for about a month or so. Hopefully that was enough :())
My daughter has been doing the same thing at 3 1/2 months old. The pediatrician said she just likes to suck and drool and there are not any teeth showing in her gums yet. I've also read that average age for teething is around 6 or 7 months, some as early as 3 months. A nurse told me that even movement in the gums will make them drool and act as if they're teething.
It could definitely be teething. My older son had his first tooth by the time he was four months old and my younger is three months old and has been teething for about two weeks. Check in his mouth and see if he's starting to get bumps where the teeth will be (probably on the bottom). Offer him other things to chew/suck on (pacifier, blanket, chew toys, your finger, etc.) and just try to keep him as happy as you can. And know that even if he's not teething now, he may be sooner than you know it.
My daughters both got their bottom teeth in at 4 months, so he isn't too young. He is on the early part of the teething age, but it isn't unheard of for it to happen.
no its not to early bc they are teethin earlier now. my lil man was teethin when he was about 5 months but they didnt start cuttin until he was 6 months or 7 months and now he has 2 teeth. i really notice he was cuttin teeth when he started wantin his wash rag to put in his mouth.
My son got his first tooth at 16 weeks...
Hi E.,
I'm a dental hygienist. I will tell you that it is very possible that your son is teething. However, children can show signs long before actually cutting a tooth. He may show more and more signs and it still be months before seeing a tooth or he could get a tooth right away. The average age for the first tooth is about 6 months, but some kids get them much earlier and some much later.
Just try to keep him comfortable. My kids always liked it when I would put damp cloth in the freezer and then let them chew on it.
Good luck,
K.
It's not too early. My son got his first tooth at just over 4 months old.
I don't think he is too young, I have known babies that have had their first tooth at 3 months. My son is 8 months old now and started teething at about 3 months. He didn't actually get any teeth until 6months and he has constantly been cutting teeth ever since. Now he has five. We use Hurricane Gel that works great. You have to ask for it at the pharmacy and it costs about the same as the Oragel. Good Luck!
Children begin teething at different ages, but 17 weeks is not too young. A lot of times, they will show all of the signs for a few months before you even see or feel the tooth. Make sure you have all of the essentials on hand because it probably is beginning. Good luck!
no hes not to young my oldest daughter had her first tooth when she was 3 months old it differs with every ones baby i have 3 girls and they all teethed at different times but really take care of it because still being on the bottle and going through sippy cups could be bad for his teeth especially when cutting them early good luck!!!
Hi E.,
My daughter had 4 teeth by the time she was 4 1/2 months old too! I suggest getting a gel-filled teething ring and putting it in the refrigerator/freezer until cold, then give it to him when he starts sucking on his bottom lip...he'll probably love it and it will sooth his gums if he is teething. Good luck! D. H.
Try Hyland's teething tablets from the Target pharmacy. They're the best. Stay away from lip balm for babies. It isn't intended for their lips & may contain bee's wax. That is dangerous since the wax can have trace amounts of honey. Babies can contract infant botulism when introduced to honey too early. Here is more information on that:

Also, some teething rings shouldn't be frozen because of the plastic that they are made of. There are some great wooden ones that are all natural & totally safe on eBay. Type in "wooden teething" & it should come up.
Good luck!!!
Its possible he is teething. My son had 4 teeth at 4 months, 7 at 7, 14 at 14, etc. My daughter on the other hand didn't cut her first tooth til' 8 months.
My daughter started teething at two months. I don't think your son is too young. Nobody believed me that my daughter was teething until I got to say "I told you so!" Every baby is different, of course. Have a good day!

HI,
I also have a 17 week old son and believe me it is not to early for them to start teething. He started drooling and chewing his lips and fingers at about a month and a half. My daughter, who is now 7, got her first tooth at 3 months old so it is definitely not to early to be teething. The bad news is that it could last for months before they even get a tooth. I don't know if this helps but just thought I would let you know what I have experienced.

If this is your first baby, it can be hard to play the guessing game sometimes. My second child cut his first tooth at 3 mo. A lot of times though all that a baby knows to comfort himself is to suck. If you rub your fingers along his gums everyday you can eventually feel a little tooth. If he is grabbing a lot of things, and putting them in his mouth, chewing them and has excessive drool on his shirt, then it is probably his teeth. If he is just sucking on his lip and making noise, he is probably just trying to comfort himself
Dear Young Mom,
Honey, Babies have a natural urge to suck. They even suck in the womb. Try the little guy on a pacifier and see if that doesn't help out. Unless they little one is doing some damage to his skin, I wouldn't worry to much about it.
Try some skin cream or lip balm if it seems to start looking chapped.
Good luck with the new little member to your home,
Nana
Your baby could be teething. It is never too early...some babies are born with teeth, really! All babies are different and develop at their own stages. When it does start, Hylands natural teething tabs are excellent. They can be found at Walgreens and some Targets. Another great thing is a baby teething mesh bag-found at babies R Us. You can put frozen fruit in it and he will LOVE the coolness on his gums. Good luck to you guys:)
