Hi Moms,

Have any of you had your teeth whitened before in a dentist office? Is it unhealthy? Did it hurt? Would you recommend it? Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi. I too have been looking into this. My husband got the tray and gel kind a few years ago and paid a good price for it. It did work but the price for the tray and gel kit was kind of crazy. And the bleaching that you get done at the office with the laser works great I've heard but again I'm shy from the price of getting it done. Upon researching this I found this video about a "how to" cheaply whiten your teeth without the dentist. Didn't know if you would be interested or not but thought I'd send it to you :)

I would never pay the $ to have done at the dentist office what I can do at home just as easily. You DO have to be careful though--the peroxide eats away at your gums and makes your teeth SUPER sensitive. Too much bleaching is NOT good and too vibrant teeth look super fake.

I had Zoom done on my teeth. I was not impressed with the results for the price. Also, if they don't get the gel all over your gums, it hurts and they have to reapply. It took forever and didn't show much of a change in my opinion. I guess I was expecting white white which is not normal and you won't achieve on natural teeth. If you want white white, you have to get veneers.

I actually found the generic brand at CVS works pretty well.

I've never had it done. My dentist from about 10 years ago said it was actually unhealthy for teeth. Maybe technology has changed since then, but I'd talk to a dentist that DOESN'T do it. They may give a more unbiased opinion than a dentist that makes money doing it.

I asked our dentist about this before our wedding and he basically said that unless you planned to give up "dark" sodas, coffee, tea, red wine, ketchup and anything with food dye in it, you are better off going with the drugstore whiteners.

It's not unhealthy, but it is pricey and if you drink or eat anything with coloring in it, your teeth will darken again.

Yep I did it about 12 years ago and it worked well and I had no problems afterward. I trust my dentist and she wouldn't have recommended something that would hurt me. She's a friend of mine.

Since having it done, I have needed touch-ups over the years, and I can get the whitening gel from her, but she also now recommends Crest White Strips as an easy way to whiten teeth if used properly. They weren't available when I had mine done 12 years ago.
